I have this very strange whiney type sound whilst driving, only appears in the very top of 3rd, and through the top halfs of 4th and 5th gear. At first I thought it could be water pump or something untill I saw how uniform it was to the motors speed, rather than engine speed. it aint loud but it is there, can't here it with the radio on etc

You can rev the engine freely and get no whine when stationary so this makes me think transmission. No I know my r380 is gonna have to be looked at within the next 12 months, its noisey in neutrel with the clutch out, so thats making me think worn input shaft bearings or summit.

Back to the sound, the car drives very well, gearbox is quite good actually, always goes in gear, dosent crunch going into reverse etc. I do however have a bit of play in my front prop, the rear is fine. Could this sound be coming from the transfer case/prop? They known to get noisey before they go?

Thanks a lot gents, any help is welcome!

Hey slob, I cant get under the motor to have a look exactly where the play is at the mo, but from what I can remember it was about 15degrees I could turn it by, like i said, rear prop was solid.

Also (sorry i shud of said this first off really) the noise goes away when you stick the clutch in, no matter what speed your doing.

you'd have to find out where the play is.. in the diff, in the uj's or in the t/box. assuming the play has anything to do with the noise which it might not have seeing as how it dunt do it at all speeds and in all gears. or is it just that its fainter in lower gears?

or is it just that its fainter in lower gears?

thats what i thought as well, it could always be there but i just cant hear it till i get up to speed.

cheers for the pointers mate, i'll have a look at the prop when i get a second at lunch.

dont yu think this is significant? If it is true - it must be clutch or engine based - not drive train.

but if its also true that its only in the higher gears that would point to drive train and not engine/clutch

unless he just cant hear it in low gears coz of a higher ambient and drive train noise levels?

so its either drive train or not or engine/clutch or not?

aye thats pretty much about the size of it but as he has a shed load of play in his prop it might be aswell to elimate that first or not before going fer the clutch or not....

and as he's already gort a clutch noise its fairly safe to assume this is another noise coming from another place. unless hes trying to disconbobulate us all

Mine does exactly the same.
Can only hear it mine around 60mph+ Its not apparent at any other time! Im not worried about it tho Everything was fine at its last major service, and it doesnt seem to be leaking/crunching or anything :D

Right, bit of a turn on this this morning while i was driving to work, the 'whine' now seams to be audible when stationary and in neutral when revving the engine, so this kinda flys in the face of my idea of it being transmission/prop etc.

low pitched, perfectly in sync with engine revs (hoping it isnt another bloody problem and its the same thing). could it be power steering pump? i assume its something on the belts, dosent sound like the turbo etc.

is the steering/water pump likley to get noisey before it goes?

cheers guys

when driving does the noise get louder and more noticable when on or off throttle?

as it is now, when you put your foot down it gets more 'intense' before the motor actually starts to accelerate. have checked turbo hoses (which are brand new, just thought i may of not tightened them etc).

as far as i am aware you will always get a bit or slack rotion wise, its up and down movement in either the bearings or the uj's we are telling you to look for.

The noise in neutral is gearbox chatter due to engine vibration transfered to box via clutch springs-Normal and should stop when you press the clutch.

As for the gearbox whine I thinks that's fairly standard, mine used to whine like yours, then it went bang, now I've got a new re-con box that still whines a bit but no where near as bad as the wife!

seriously? sounds less like chatter and more like the engine and transmission are aving a shouting match.

are we talking 30° overall?? even fer a landy thats excessive ! damm near 1/3 of a turn..

ere Slob - how do yu make 1/3 of 360 degrees = 30degrees?

or duz the Metric system only have 90degrees in a circle?
