Discovery 2 which has started making a horrid whine when first started. It isn't that loud but increases with revs and then much louder when steering wheel turned.

After driving for about 5 mins it virtually disappears.

Any ideas what it could be?

I know description is very vague - can't think how else to describe it.

Just seems strange it virtually disappears after a few mins of running - & it isn't just that I turn the radio up!!!!

Hoping to get reassurance that if I keep driving it til after Christmas that nothing horrid is going to happen - come on you lot you must have a crystal ball between you :)

try talc on the belt, if it stops whinning you need a new belt, if it dont could be start of one of the pulleys failing

sorry I'm very new to looking under the bonnet - which belt - where is it.

I'll take it into the garage after Christmas but just need to know I'm not at risk of doing any damage if I drive it until I get chance.

I know that's an impossible thing to say for sure but if it's a slipping / loose / worn belt can it do any damage if it breaks or will something just stop working?

Please be gentle........it's a new environment for me

there is a belt at front of engine you, may need to take fan guard off to see it, if it breaks you loose the water pump, power steering, and aircon if fitted

ok thanks - I might have to find a way of getting it to the garage before Christmas cos I don't want that happening.

Last yr the starter motor went just before Christmas & I was stuck without a vehicle until after the New Year as no one was working or shipping parts out.

Typical it plays up again this time of yr!

have you checked the power steering fluid levels?
as my 200 DTi does this a bit more quietly till it warms up...

oh, my fluids fine tho`...
but done 197000 miles..lol

Today's crystal ball goes to easye1! Thanks.

Popped the bonnet this morning & lo & behold the power steering fluid was just below the min level.

Quick trip to my local fabulous garage & came away with it topped & & 1/4 bottle of proper landrover fluid to keep in the landy in case it drops again. No charge
:)

No more noise :)

The bottle of fluid is probably left over from what they bought when they replaced a power steering hose about a yr ago but still good of them to let me have it.

There must be a leak somewhere but that can wait til after Christmas to be looked at.

Thanks for all the suggestions - it gave me something to look at and be able to vaguely sound a bit informed when I called the garage.
