Hi

Just wandering what the minimum lifting capacity of a trolley jack I should use whilst propping up my disco 2 V8 ?

Manual says car is 2.25 tonnes so will a two tonne jack be good enough just so I can get it on axle stands ?

Cheers !

Halfords quite often have a 4x4 trolley jack on offer for £40 I think. Think it's 2.25 swl which is plenty as you're only going to jack up front or back at the very most. It goes up quite high too !

I find the saddles on the halfords jacks far too small.

I have one of these:

Clarke CTJ2001G 2 Tonne Trolley Jack - Machine Mart

Had it for years and never let me down.

Don't forget that just because the car is 2.25tonne it doesn't mean your lifting 2.25tonne, your lifting one corner, not the entire car.

Also, a decent 2tonne jacks do not tend to bend, regardless of what other members of the forum might tell you!!!!

Who said anything about decent?????

Trying to lift any large 4x4 with a substandard jack is both pointless and dangerous. Invest in good tools for the job and do it right.
Also using a correct jack takes less time to do the job as everything is big and long enough to deal with the requirements.

Seen too many cocks ups using not fit for purpose tools.

So although some members will tell you a 2 tonne jack is good enough just think about what you are trying to achieve and consider if the consequences are worth the short cut.

A decent 2 ton jack is ample. By decent I don't mean Halfords I mean a decent well built one with a wide base and a decent hydraulic ram.

I refer back to my original statement. Your NOT lifting 2 ton of car, your lifting a corner of it.

I got 2 halfords 2 ton jacks both lift my disco with ease as someone said your not lifting 2 ton

No trade discount on car mats as I found out recently.... I thought I was going to pay less for a birthday present for the wife.:(
