Hi guys,

I'm thinking I'm gonna need one of these at some point. So I was looking through the Haynes and tried to find the min and max torque settings that I might require.

the majority were between 7Nm and 130Nm, with a few at around 200Nm and one at 280Nm (Crankshaft bolt I think). There was also one at 4Nm.

Now, I know you can't get one wrench which covers the entire range. I have a decent 1/2" square drive socket set, so I'd like a 1/2" torque wrench with as wide a range as possible.

I noticed that for lower torque settings, you tend to find these are 3/8" square drives. I have 3/8" to 1/2" converters - but does this affect the torque setting if I use one of these?

So - any advice on which wrench to get? I don't want to spend hundreds, but at the same time, I'm not after a "value" one which hasn't been calibrated. I've looked at some Draper and Sealey ones - are there any others out there which I should consider? What do you guys use?

Cheers.

have a look at these two - they will cover most of your range and not too expensive - you will need a 3/8 drive socket set. I also find a set of open ended 3/8 or 1/2 drive spanners

are very useful, as you cant always get a socket in position.

eBay.co.uk: DRAPER TORQUE WRENCH - 3/8" SQUARE DRIVE (item 110094697122 end time 02-Mar-07 20:07:14 GMT)

eBay.co.uk: DRAPER 1/2" Sq Drive Torque wrench 30-210Nm Brand NEW (item 160087873676 end time 27-Feb-07 23:15:00 GMT)

they should cover 10-210Nm. Anything outside this range becomes very expensive

20 years ago I have said don't touch Draper with a barge pole but nowadays there probably as good as anyone else.

Whichever one you get always unscrew the setting type handle thing after you've finished with it or it will go out of calibration.

No your torque setting will not be effected!!! But as said above, remember to wind down the wrench after use!!! and don't wind it down all the way till it stops, this too will wreck it and throw the calibration out!
