Hi

I want to put a snorkel on my TD5 Defender, but cant find out why there are different fitments at the top.
Is this only cosmetic, or is there a reason why some are open and others like mushroom.

How do lad, they could be for different types of top, you can even get one that looks like a goldfish bowl would you believe!!!!

I am still unsure of the reason for the difference.
I prefer the look of the open snorkel with the vent cover, but it does look as if it would act as a straw, sucking in water on a rainy day.
 
I intend making mine out of an old K&N air filter an some 2 1/2" copper tube but I'm having trouble getting it bent.
 
The K&N is bent, I nicked it. The copper tube int bent and needs to be but I ant got the gear to do it and a 90 degree fitting costs a fortune and any how it dunt want to be bent at 90 degrees, hope this clarifies things.
 
it dont matter which top you have fitted. mushrooms are fine and so are the so called open ones you speak of. id suggest getting a safari one or similar because of the way they attach to the body. they are less prone to snagging on trees/bushes etc when out laning. if you get branches behind the tubular ones they can sometimes pull on the mounts and cause them to losen... as ive found out.

so pay the extra and fit a safari. if you worried about the driving rain/dust, turn the head around 180 degrees to face backwards. the goldfish bowl they speak of is a prefilter mechanism. but dont bother spending the extra on this unless your going to africa/morocco.

New to the forum so apologies if not quite loopy enough.

Just fitted Safari snorkel to 110 TD5. Took longer than expected as I had to cut off the aerial brace on top of the inner wheel arch using a hand held hacksaw blade, v fiddly. Then major willies about taking hole saw to new pride and joy. Took the precaution of filing down sawn edge and painting with touch up paint since it was steel and could wear connector hose.

Aerial has to be moved forward by 3 or 4 inches. Make sure to read the instructions on centering new hole. Over enthusiasm nearly led to a miscut!

Take top wing vent (blank) off to access hose connections. Hose connector tool (small socket on bendy stem) useful.

Also fitted breather extensions which push fit on my model (05) and join up into a manifold behind engine block so single breather comes out between bonnet and wing to run up the back of the snorkel (zip tied). For tidyness I pushed it up into the snorkel head at the back (a bit of filing to avoid pinching breather off.

SnorKel turned out to be a useful place to mount a GPS aerial. Much improved signal.

Not sure if Mantec/mushroom type are easier to fit.

The mushroom ones are designed to act like a cyclone and spit out the larger bits of dust in the air so that you can drive in dusty conditions for longer without having to clean the standard air filter. The others only raise the air intake.
