My lovely wife has surprised me and offered to buy me a Landy for my 50th, she was thinking of a Series 1, 2 or 3 brought on a low budget, the only thing is it will have to be able to tow a vintage Fordson Super Major, could anyone offer any advise on which would be the best to go for? Diesel, petrol, LWB, SWB etc.

Thank you.

What is the all-up train weight going to be?

Series brakes are nothing special, even with the 11" brakes on the LWB.

IIRC a series landy is only rated to tow 2000kg. Having towed a bit with my old 109 I remember the trailer brakes doing more of the stopping than the Landy ones.

So as the tractor weighs in the region of 2400 kg would it be foolish to buy Serues Landy?

Sheet O'Reilly I should say so. How much will the trailer be?

Any Land Rover Series 'on a budget' is asking for trouble too.

Series 3's for certain and probably 2's as well are rated to tow 3500kg. Series brakes if kept maintained will lock the wheels up, I'm not sure (short of ABS) how much more braking you can need.

LWB will be more stable.

In fact, to add to this, here's mine with a Series 1 Field Marshall.

There seems to be some debate on this but both of the series Landies I've owned were plated for a max tow of 2 tons, a '77 series 3 109 and an '82 series 3 88. More weight than that would require coupled brakes. You have to ask yourself if using a "budget" old Land Rover to tow heavy loads on the road is sensible anyway. It's not just the braking ability but the general state of decay of many old vehicles and the enormous strain that will be placed on tired components.

Are you reading the chassis plate correctly? Below is mine from a 1980 88"

In order
Max vehicle weight 2120Kg
Max train weight 6120Kg
Max front axle weight 930Kg
Max rear axle weight 1190Kg

It's a Standard S3 with a defender front, with a 3.9 serp V8.

The Defender front is soon to be replaced with the original S3 front, work very much in progress.

On the trailer is a 1946 Series 1 Field Marshall, looking very green where I have just recovered it from a barn where it had stood for many years. Now running sweet.
