I'm planning to buy a Range Rover and I have £9,000 to spend, but which one do I buy.
I was thinking of buying a L322 V8 as I will do less than 3,000 miles a year, but is a diesel better ?

Is a P38 any good ? diesel or pertrol as I can buy a 2002 model for half the price of a L322, why ?

I would apreciate any advice

Thanks
heres my 2 pence worth. iv had a few p38 disel:). it just my throughts but the petrol p38 is not worth a **** they cost to much to run and seem to be parked up most of there life and thats no good for any car..my first disel was a night mare every time i looked at it something would brake..it cost me £3.500 to buy and i spent around £3000 fixing it..the p38 disel i have now. had a few faults but they was a cheep and easy fix with the help of the people on here. some do know wot there talking about:D now days the p38 is very cheep to fix wot ever brakes as long as you find and fit your own parts:Dbut the p38 is getting on now...iv seen the new shape for as low as £7000 witch makes it very tempting but it will brake down and it will be telephone numbers to get it fixed..id say have a look at something els and save your self the hart ake ...you have got £9000 i think your way passed a p38:D and as beautiful as thay are dont wast your money on the new shape range rover

The EAS is cheap to fix and reliable if maintained.:) L322's are already suffering EAS failures not to mention gearbox, steering column, yaw sensor, sat nav failures etc etc. I have 2 mates with P38's and 2 with L322's, so far the P38's have been less trouble and the bits cost a lot less, £60 for a P38 airspring, £389 for a L322 front airstrut for example.
I have now asked 3 different land rover specialists and they tell me the L322 is no more reliable than a p38 but much more expensive to fix .You would think they would know and thats enough to put me off getting one .

Well said.

get an ultra nice 2 door classic , it will only go up in value :D

mines on an agreed value for 8k atm

L322 all the way
Iv got the HSE spec which luckily had been bought with all the extras of the vogue

So I ended up getting a vogue for the price of the hse
Which coated me just under 9 grand

Vogue will be the best but you Wont get a vogue for under 10 grand

Saying that if you only have 9 grand to spend will you be able to afford the petrol guzzling of the petrol model ? Lol
Mines a diesel and I would recommend getting a diesel one
Quite a decent engine in the td6
Even better once chipped :p
hi so iv been told the very last thing you want to do to the naw shape disel is have it chiped. the gear box will give up on you. its maxed out allready. the p38 disel can take the extra 33bhp but thay have been know to fu.k the gear box on them to:)??

i know some one that brought a brand new disel range rover in 2007 dont know how much it was but i can tell you that its now on engine number 3 engine no1 went in the first year something to do with no oil:confused::confused: she did not have to foot the bill but if it was second hand she would of been crying all the way to the bank.

mmm nice way of considering a motor, surely more informative relevant information would be better like.....

the p38 is a terrible motor,it will gobble up yr cash quicker than a thai hooker, the suspension if it hasnt will drop on its arse at some point and cost a fortune to sort

if it hasnt it will fail to start at some point

the electrics if they havent will fail at some point

but on the plus side the dash illumination is about right at night:rolleyes:
the p38 is a grate car and cheep to fix now days.it sounds like you might of had a bad one and like me paying some one els to do the work as i did on my last one but now i can find most parts very cheep and when you get stuck in to it i think the p38 disel is very easy to work on. iv found all 4 air bags brand new for £60 so i got them and a thai hooker:D

I have heard similar stories. There are some good ones out there but if i was spending 50k plus i would not expect to have to keep my fingers crossed.

The ZF4HP22 Auto on the P38 diesel is running close to max torque as standard, chipping it takes it over the max torque rating and eventually screws the box. It's torque not BHP that is the problem:eek: It would be nice to have the cash to fit the ZF4HP24 box instead.:)

thats wot i ment:D:D:D lol:)

I thought it was just the torque convertor that was too small on the doozil? the box is the same as the 4.6, does the chipped doozel produce more tourqe than that?

The ZF4HP22 was fitted to the diesel and V8 4.0, the 4.6 had the ZF4HP24, torque convertors also changed. The diesel torque from memory is slightly higher than the V8 4.0 both of which are close the the 22's limit. Chipped the diesel torque is greater than the V8 and also above the 22's limit.:D

fair enough, I didnt know the 4.6 had a 4hp24 but as I often say I know fook all bout the p38- mind you doesnt stop me posing bout it :p

I laughed when i saw this thread :)

I have bought a 2002 L322 4.4 V8 about 4/5 months ago. Biggest piece of **** iv'e ever owned!! But i love it! :)

They are awsome cars but break every 5 minutes. They are prone to gearbox issues and radiator leaks.

If your going to buy one, make sure you get one with under 100k miles. That way you can still qualify to get Landrover Assist Warrenty. AND YOU NEED WARRENTY!!!!!!!!!!
Most people wont give you warrenty if you've done more than 100k. Very few do. In fact i only found one and it isn't cheap.
They are great cars but you will have to get used to spending an eternity chasing ghosts in the computer system!

Good luck is all i'll say lol.

Oh and you can get an L322 for under 10k. You can get one with LPG as well for that money but again, it just leaves you open for more things to go wrong.

May the force be with you.

Agreed.

More electrics = more to go wrong.
