Hi all,
Does anyone know whats on the menu diesel engine wise on the P38, or has anyone already done it, if so which engine did you use.
Any idea's appreciated.:welcome2:

Add the 325 TDS to the list and thats about it!

Anything else requires a lot of work. There are guys who were putting the 530d engine in but I haven't heard any update in a while. It requires a lot of work on the electronic side to make the interface work.

certain bits are diferent

exhaust manifold and turbo
sump and pick up pipe

So if you have a blown diesel engine and it is a replacement all good.

If not then some work and part scavengin to do

I see a very old Land Rover in Domnican Republic with a Massy Ferguson tractor engine in it, (Perkins), had no bonnet or front wings , not a problem there as some of the trucks have the bonnet missing

Hi i have just put a 525 engine in you have to change inlet manifold/turbo/sump & pick up pipe but i am having trouble getting fuel to injectors so i my have to change the pump aswell , we will see soon .Hope this was any help

that mitsi engines nice.probaly a case of wire to the solenoid and it will run as well no fannying about with immobilised pumps

i think my range has poor compression as its a bastard to start all the time ive tried a non return valve new glow plugs its defo getting fuel properly. it had me thinking about the 3litre diesel but they are twin cam so theres a few differences.. i was contemplating a block change to the 3 liter block with 2.5 head and ancileries..

this could be due the the pump

im thinking injectors at the minute, and im hoping. the non return valve means the pump and filter is full so the diesels not running back. however if the injectors are ****ed ( and it does smoke under load ) im thinking they drip into the cylinder emptying the injector pipe,. the thing is i find if i turn the car over till it kicks once then use the heater plugs again it starts better so im thinking the plugs are heating thin air to start with as the injector pipes are empty.. the only thing is it still takes a good few kicks to get going which is making me think poor compression. I know these m51 engines do suffer from it as the rings wear.

:/ so mabye an engine out job.
plus its also using a bit of water. only a touch mind you but. could be head gasket on the way out also.

Hmmm, not sure about that Scottie. Is it chipped? Is it smoking black or blue smoke? If it's smoking black under load that means its getting more diesel than it can burn at those revs which points to the injectors being reasonably ok but your turbo maybe not so good. I'd check all the hoses to make sure you're not losing boost. If you have access to diagnostics just check what boost pressure you are getting. If its making blue then you're probably right about rings and compression but if it was that bad it would be blue all the time.

What glow plugs did you use. I did mine with spurious plugs before Christmas - disaster. It's worse than ever when cold. I haven't gotten round to putting genuine Beru ones in so I just give it two turns of the ignition. I don't crank it at all after the glow plug light goes out the first time, just turn it off and straight back on again. It then starts the first sniff of a crank when the glow plug goes out the second time. Huge difference between the ****ty spurious glowplugs and the genuine article. both in temperature reached and time to temperature.

I reckon the TDV8 would do nicely, although I've no idea how technically possible it is. Think I'll put that on my list of mods for when I've won the lotto:D:D:D

I'm looking round for options, one of the things that is an issue is separating the donor engine ecu from the other systems.

Bosch sport Diesel ecu is the only one I found that would run modern diesels. £1000 ish:eek:
The two ways I see you could do it is either have all extras turned off and fool the ecu with the ones you can't

I'm toying with a iveco 167hp common rail diesel injection lump- to get round security I would keep original key pick up and chip in ip sealed box.
Either using existing ignition switch or relays/electronics to provide appropriate key positions via landrover ignition switch.

Just a thought

This may not the reach I thought.... just found thread on LR4x4.com by a guy working on getting one into a fender. Last post was March last year but he had a running engine together with 6 speed manual box ready to go into the truck.
