Ok here is Bens first stupid question on the forums.

I have recently bought myself a disco , tdi green , 1998. thats is all the information i know for sure. I know what your thinking , im mad i should have checked exactly what im buying. Ofcourse your right , BUT here in Cyprus we do not have that liberty. I arrived here december last year and i come back to the UK in Jan 08. Here is my question:

How do i find out exactly what model i have and what trim:confused:

i have been told that its a 1998 land rover disco 300tdi xs

i would love to be able to confirm that.

none of these details are held on the log book except age and make/model.

Any information from the experts is appreciated.
enclosed is a pic maybe this will help you?

Hi if its an xs will have half leather interior with landrover logo on it have deep dish alloy wheels as standard also xs lower stickers and side body mouldings front fogs to name a few i hope this helps tiga

cheers tiga , it has got half leather and land rover on the clothe , also it did have the lower sticker across both doors but with the heat out here they started to fade and peel , so i asked for them to be removed. Thanks for your reply. any ideas how i know what engine it is?

vin plate number salj- what ever look up the landrover database it s on the net and each character of the plate represents landrover type ie dsicover defender range rover... body type door configuration finish place and year of manufacture etc...

please excuse the spelling , its still early. Thanks for your replies guys most appreciated , i must ask one more to satisfy my curiosity. This may be a fault/problem on the landrover but is it common place to have both front wheel "squeal" when turning round corners? i cannot for the life of me workout what it is. Ive taken it too the mechanics here in Cyprus , but i have to say they are as much use as reversing lights on missiles. again thanks for your help and time , still looking for the database , and to be real greedy any info on the "squealing"

Many thanks

Ben

ok the fluid is fine , i dont think its the power steering as the nice comes from the wheel depending which way u turn the steering wheel. doesnt matter how much of a lock you put on.

Hi again my front tyres squeal when i drive round in asda car park but only there it never done it when i had pirelli tyres on but does it know on michelins on so i put it down to the tyres and my tracking is fine shocks are quite new so unless you have wheel wobble or bad grinding noises keep driving, also check your tyre pressures, atb tiga.

it sounds like something is running dry , more of a metal on metal sound , and is now not exclusive to turning the wheel. The rest of the car is great this little thing is just niggling at me. As for tyre pressure i guess im looking at 30psi all round? i have National XT Commando tyres , again i dont know the tyre so dont know if they are any good.

hmm my guess would be to find someone local and cheap who really knows the beast and get it serviced . could be lack of lube an d a service would sort it out/ WAS THERE A SERVICE HISTORY WITH IT? I expect some of the guys on here could talk you through what to do i f you want to get your overalls on and get grimy (yes that term guy s includes the well able women who weild spanners and torque wrenches too) i got radical this weeken dan d put four new calipers on mine scary but with someon e else passing the beers it went ok took about 3 hours to do all 4 and that included making up all new brake pipes....but I digress......
