Evening all.
What replacement shocks would you recommend to either buy or, more importantly...steer clear of please?
P38 booked in next Wednesday, so I need to order the CORRECT ones.
Somebody suggested Recovery with a +2" (lift I assume) compared to standard.
Would they give issues with EAS?
Any mods needed when fitting them?
Quoted £100 labour to install all four. Reasonable?

No reason why not OEM Oakey, just asking the collective for their experiences.

Are you still on standard air suspension? If so don't go for longer shocks as this allows the axles to droop too far and risks damaging a height sensor. Bilstein are the go to.
 
Usually on EAS, but currently have individual Schrader valves as a leak in airline somewhere. That'll be fixed when on ramp. Happy to keep it simple and stick with original spec, rather than +2"

I had KONI adjustables many moons ago on Lotus7 Series 3 & Series 4. Never had to change any shocks on any of the subsequent 40+ cars I've owned.

Originals were Boge which I find very good. I think @brianp38dse has Bilstein on his?

Do not put extra long on unless you have Arnott gen 3 air-springs and have extended your height sensors and brake flexis and possibly the ABS sensor wires.
 
I have Britpart standard oil shocks and the ride is sublime they were cheaper than cheap. ;) good value.

Cellular dynamics and Bilsteins are stiffer and TF are pure evil!! ;)

Mine came with Britpart on it and one snapped!

Terrafirma were a mistake. They were horribly firm. That's when I went Boge.

I have wondered how much for some adjustable ones made up bespoke, especially after a few beers and watching something like Wheeler Dealers.

I agree but for £18 "i think" per shock not bad!

I don't think you can get a set of BOGE shocks anymore, unless the Rimmers "oem" option is BOGE.

MONROE's are another good option,

Actually, now I think about it Brian might have Monroe.

Got my shocks from Island 4x4.

I run the same Britpart kit on my 2.5 and it gives a lovely ride. Think it was around £72 for the full kit with new nuts.
 
Yes i have the Monroe adventurers on mine and they seam fine to me, but i dont know what the originals were like as mine were a bit goosed hence the new ones
 
Pfff, I own a Volvo v50 that is really a Ford focus on 17's handles like a go cart, so does my 38' on terrafirmas and poly anti roll bar bushes. Tyres at 2.4 bar front and rear but that is my own choice. My son runs softer shocks and softer Tyre pressures. I don't get sick in mine on corners!! :p each to their own. ;)

What are Recovery +2"? Not heard of them.

Ultimately, what do you use your p38 for?

If it is just normal road use, then I suspect almost any standard replacement shock will be perfectly fine. And I also suspect most people would not be able to tell one brand from another. Let's also not forget that in most cases people replace worn out shocks with new items. So, regardless of make, the new ones will always ride better.

If you are building the vehicle for off roading, then a longer shock will give you more suspension travel. Which will translate into a more stable vehicle off road and less lifting of wheels from the ground. But longer shocks will need the rest of the suspension to support the additional travel.

There is quite the difference between shocks on the P38.. ;)

For example Monroe and Bilsteins the latter is firmer, Koni too are an option however very expensive £200 for a pair IIRC.

The Britpart units on mine are very soft, and before anyone says it yes they work! ;)

But the ride is the best it has ever been. :)
 
Recovery brand shocks are from the "Land down under" evidently.
Very occasional, light off-road (not extreme), so happy to use standard fit. Budget very tight, so going for Britpart.

Give the top rear connections a good soak in plusgas should be able to spray it in there without taking the arch liner off. Mine needed a lot of force to crack them off

On my second set of TF HD on the rear. Cheap and cheerful, okay on coils but don’t seem to go so well with airsprings.
Have ancient yellow ones on front, don’t know what they are but must be good quality due to fact they are still in one piece as I’ve never changed them
