I'm thinking of selling my car for approx 4k and replacing it with a land rover... But which one?

I'd love a 90, the look really appeals to me and I love the simplicity, but they seem really expensive! Worth the extra?

I also like discos, bit more refinement, plenty of room for my bike & camping gear, cheaper than defenders but maybe thirstier?

Then there's the freelander. Obviously cheaper in every sense, still a nice looking car and readily available.

I'm not planning any full on green laning (yet), The odd Lakeland bridleway would be good but it'd be a day to day commute car too (40 mile round trip), I also do alot of mountain walking/biking in the lakes so a 200 mile round trip every few weeks up the M6 is necessary too.

What are your thoughts?

Disco 1, 300 tdi, in my opinion. A lot of vehicle for less money than a Defender. No real difference in fuel economy as many 90s will have the same engine. A lot of jobs and general maintenance can be done with a basic tool kit, patience and a Haynes Manual.

You should get a nice late 300 tdi (the best ones) for no more than £2500-£3000 and have money left for any improvements and maintenance.

I've also just picked up a second hand bike carrier that mounts to the spare wheel carrier. Really excellent for up to 4 bikes and I can still fill the car with the family and all our clobber.

For £4k you could get a Defender though it would probably not be the best option if you know your only going to use it on the road. I would personally get a Discovery, they're not really any more thirsty than defenders, it all depends on how you drive them. For £4000 you could either get a good nick disco 1 and have a little cash left over for anything that may go wrong, or go for a average condition Disco 2.

If you get one that you look after and that hasnt been abused, they aren't as unreliable as many say...

Not had my first Defender long and loving it. 2005 CSW and has proved pretty reliable so far.
