I am rebuilding a 1984 RRC. But I have also bought a 1988 RRC for parts. The 84 has a 3.5 twin carb with su carbs. She is on 123500miles. The 88 has a 3.5 efi on 38600 miles but has been stood for a few years. Is it worth, providing it runs ok, swapping the EFI into the 84?

The 84 was last driven on the road 7 years ago but been ran and driven regularly, the 88 I would guess hasn't moved for 10+years

EFi on a 9.35:1 engine please.

If its not ran for a while then pull the dizzy and drive the oil pump first to get the oil moving, then replace and set timing to TDC on 1, then turn engine by hand to spread a bit of oil about, ideally remove plugs to make this easier and out new plugs in, then give it a go.

EFi is just better than carbs!

Was going to put new oil in through the top then turn by hand. Then crank it. Then put some liquid tax in and start it. But your way sounds better.

Well, whatever makes you happy really, but it's just that if it's a genuine 36k engine then you want to be sure you're not damaging it when you turn it over.

In fact how about plugs out and some oil in the bores too, to lubricate, it might have gone a bit rusty but hopefully will clean itself up.

Just need to make all the reasonable precautions before turning it over at any kind of pace!

New plugs will help it fire on all cylinders, quite important at the first start stage.

Gap them to 0.8mm, NGK BPR6ES

Good luck with it, lets have a video :D

By the way being an 88 is it flapper or Hotwire?

Your advice is great. Thanks. Don't know what it is, I have only had carb version in the past and not really done much to then. What is the difference?

Not picking it up for another week so can't look at it.

Will post a video :D

I talked to noisy about this and if its a Hotwire it needs to have the Hotwire ecu and maf just like the flapper needs the right one as injectors and other hits are different

Would think its a flapper anyway as my 89 3.5 is

It'll be a flapper then.

Oh well no great shakes but yeah unfortunately not that simple to convert to Hotwire.

Flapper is ok but basically it's not a good performance system, nor is it tuneable.

The car will run just fine etc but if you're ever considering upgrades a pretty early one should be upgrading to Hotwire.

You can't even go direct to Megasquirt because MS uses Hotwire components!!

Keep updates coming stu, cheers :)

you can just fit the 3.9 system on ,must be loads of those about on cracked 3.9s ,originally they used the same ecu 3.5 and 3.9,id just never fit a low comp

If I rebuilt the engine I would want to do a full upgrade and fit sport cams etc, not got the money at the moment, got to finish the car rebuild first the engine is just a bonus that was unplanned.

Hear is the only pic I have got of it, going to paint bits to smarten in up.

Well, it's crusty!!

It's also a flapper!

It's a high compression engine, what's your carb engine??
