Hello to the forum.

Just joined the Zone. Not got a landy - yet - but thinking about a Freelander (around 98 to 02ish) as it will have to double a family car.

Question is - which style and which engine. Any opinions and advice welcome.
Me currently leaning towords station wag, but missus likes the hard back idea of top off in summer - any probs with these?? (not the missus's top)

Have driven a couple of 1.8s and a couple of deisels (1 tdi and 1 pre-tdi but with turbo).
Think I prefer the deisel but they are dearer and raises the Q of which deisel. I believe that there are 3 types (at least) non turbo, turbo, and bmw tdi.

Finally, these aint so strong as discos or counties, what is their off road ability or capability, not that I aim to go on an AWDC safari (yet) but green laning might be fun?

may i respectfully suggest you look in the general answers bit and try a search - you will find lots to read.

The general concensus tho is dont touch one with a bargepole - especially the petrols unless you dont mind walking and have very deep pockets.

I have a 1.8 petrol (1999) and am looking at possibly another head gasket failure within 7 months of it being replaced, so I'd agree, don't touch the petrol with a barge pole! I don't know if the diesels are any better on head gaskets and everything else? Are they money pits too?
 
Any of the Diesels...no petrol, not just the head gasket but also the running costs.Mines a 1999 Di and i gives an average of 30+mpg all day long.

Just to add an impartial note:

the diesels can blow head gaskets and oil coolers, not to mention the serious amount of sensors on the Td4 that need a diagnostic plug in just to confirm the problem.

If you are not an enthusiast or prepared to get your hands dirty then buy a Japanese motor ( ALL THIS FROM A FREELANDER FAN)
 
The TD4 is the pick of the bunch - same engine as the BMW 3-series. Very reliable, great engine. (Northern Islander points out it can have head gasket failure as well ... but then any vehicle with a head gasket can have a head gasket failure!)

The earlier L-series diesel is robust, reliable but not very exciting.

The petrols can be a bargain but are best left to the enthusiasts and keen mechanics.

With regard to the syle, can you live with a three door? Do you need to access the rear seats often? SW is a bit more civilised.

Why not get a Disco if you're looking for a 'family car' and you'll get a more reliable vehicle (hopefully) !!

You mentioned 'double' 1 = Family, so what's 2 = ??
 
Have you confirmed a 2nd hgf?

It wasnt fixed correctly the first time, or the offending cause of the 1st hgf wasnt dealt with.
No, we're just keeping an eye on the water at the moment. It has a water leak which one garage said was coming from the hg, but someone else said there would be oil in with the coolant if it was a hg failure.

Well we were considering a Nissan X-trail. This car will have to last us 5 years before we can afford to change again so I think perhaps we should go Japanese!

It's a late 2000 with just under 55,000 miles all serviced

The dash had fallen apart on the X-Trail I used to drive. It was an O2 plate and all the plasticcy bits and switch work were well ropey by late 2006.

HGF is generally only on early engines...
Im told no more common on facelifted hippos than on any other car?
and apparantly 1.8 can be tuned to about 200hp if you've got the time and money cuz its the same engine used in lotuses back then.
KV6 2.5L is a beast though... beast beast beast beast beast
 
KV6 has HGF problems coz its based on the K series. It also has all the other Hippoo related problems. Plus a few just for itself :(
