The td6 is the disastrous GM box as far as I know. It's not if it fails, it's when it fails. I think the tdv8 is a ZF box which are not unknown to fail but I think they're generally accepted to be OK.
To be fair, the GM box is perfectly fine as a gearbox, its just a bit underspecced in a vehicle as heavy as an L322. Not really the fault of the gearbox.

Kiss it:p Only had it 10 days, if had happened earlier in the old Merc it would have taken my head off.:D

Off to the step with you and your crinoline dress, young man! I get what you mean. Dad had FL10, then changed to FH12. Massive difference. Although I thought the FL10 was the bees knees until I saw the FH12. And what a dream to drive. My only complaint being typical wagon, lack of leg room :(

To be fair, I've had 3 omegas with the same gearbox and they all failed at some point.
I agree that fitting a flaky box to a torquey diesel in a heavy car isn't the box's fault but it was borderline in the car it was designed for!

So have we decided which engine yet? ?
Yeah, the 12 litre :p:p:p:D
Back on track....... I personally think, go petrol. Diesel is being slammed and will only continue to be. For someone not doing high mileage, there is not a major difference, cost wise, by the time cost of diesel per mile and cost of petrol per mile is worked out. Added to which the petrol bring s/c bragging rights :D

There was on mine, the wheel hit me just below the steering wheel and crushed the cab

See you haven't set up camp yet Andy, Grrrrr threw a spanner in the works suggesting petrol so I've been looking at the 4.2 s/c. Insurance wise there is not a lot in it compared with the 3.6 weasel. Trouble is I have a lead right boot and tow an 1800kg tin tent. Then the Enemy said if we sell the house abroad then you can get a better/newer model.I assumed she was talking about cars.;):D

What about a 4.2s/c?
A bit heavier at the pumps but petrol is slightly cheaper and if the current war on diesel continues it might end up being cheaper per mile.
Also, when I've been looking, the 4.2s/c's all seem to be better specced than the tdv8 for similar money.

Totally agree with this, if you can stomach the extra fuel cost then go for the 4.2 S/C, on a 300 mile journey it is costing me around an extra £15-£20 but worth every penny imo

Not yet, i'm like the kids program from the 80's - the littlest homo ;)
I think i would be buying the 4.2 SC and moving abroad on my own :D

same engine ?
