Hi All , I want to buy one of those heavy black pullers off eBay but whereas they all look the same and are all described as Land Rover Defender drop arm pullers they have a variety of sizes given , 19mm , 24mm , 43mm , 57.5mm and even 75mm ! Can anyone shed any light on this ?

The 75mm spread is the one you need, others are for smaller joints. Do not go cheap here, expect to pay over £50 for a known make.
Reach is the distance the bolt will pull. Not much needed on a drop arm as it is on a taper and will come off as soon as it lets go.
There is some confusion here with dimensions as some makers specify the gap between jaws and others total width of the tool, Just as long as maker say's "for the drop arm" you should be good.

I find it easier to put a long drift down through the open bonnet onto the shoulder of the drop arm, and give it a few good smacks with a club hammer. Often knocks it off straight away.

If you do get a puller, try softening it up with a bit of hammering on the drift first, then put the puller on and give it a try.

This is the method I use but he asked. TOTTOT.:)

So I got the correct puller off eBay for the princely sum of £24.49 , using a breaker bar with a length of pipe and alternately tightening and battering from above the arm eventually surrendered it's grip . It put up one hell of a fight though !

Well done, the first time I removed the one one mine it was the same done the Turboman way. It's been off a couple more times since then, never as hard to remove as the first time. A tad of copper ease on splines may have helped.

I put Copper Ease on the splines when I replace them, although I think it says not to in the manual. Never had one fall off.
