Hi,

I am planning on buying a Discovery for a bit of a road trip to Mongolia, I am allowing several months for the trip which should be nice and fun.

Anyway I think a Discovery is the right vehicle for me to do this trip in as it is very capable off-road, plenty of space, powerful, and generally reliable.

But which discovery do I need? I believe the 300TDi is the best out of all the TdI's what is the difference between a 200 and a 300?

Is there anything that goes wrong on diesel discos about the 100k mark?
Can you suggest any modifacations I should do on the vehicle before I leave?

Oh and can I fit a bigger fuel tank?

Thanks,

James

You will find a 300 more comfortable and refined on a long trip like that. The timing belt is much easier to change along with the other ancilleries at the front of the engine, power steering pump alternator etc.

If the timing belt hasnt been changed then do it before you go (dzus make some timing gears to do away with the belt altogether)

I think the fuel tank more-or-less fills the hole its in, but you should find plenty of room for a second tank

Thanks Stodd.

I think the 300TDi is the way forward then!
I will have it all serviced, mot'd, and cambelted up.

I understand that the Discoverys are prone to steering damage, so is it a must have for a disco to get some steering protection?

I doubt I will be going off road strictly but the roads are pretty **** and non-existant in the old russian states.
