Hello all, I've been hunting and reading for a good car, almost clinched the deal with a friend's Disco2 (TD5) but alas, somebody made him an offer I wasn't willing to match.

So I hunted and shopped some more, and have come to two "finalists"
1. August 2000 TD5 (dealer), new clutch and flywheel, 110thou miles but no service history. €4500

2. December 1992 V8 petrol (private sale), FSH, only 62thou miles.€12K

I can afford either...
- the TD5 will certainly require VERY careful scrutiny and servicing before I can consider any off-road kit.
- the V8 is a turn-key deal, but fuel consumption is a bit on the thirsty side...

Thoughts ?
 
The TD5 at 4500Euro looks like it has no sunroof.
This is a major plus and should ensure no rust in door pillars, etc.
Looks an honest car and decent colour.
Price is still a little steep though. What has it had done?
1) Head gasket and dowels changed (a must)
2) Oil pump bolt sorted
3) ABS mods
4) Rear chassis in sound condition, possibly renovated and painted.
5) Whole chassis waxoyled inside and out.
6) Steering box leak free.
Downside is that its manual (my opinion).
They are still asking top money.

V8 looks like whoever priced that was smoking rope.

...at that mileage I have seen similarly mad prices. Two good things about these is that it being Italy, rust will be less of a problem.
and the Italians do good LPG!
If he can afford it why not the V8 and put purpose built lpg tanks underrneath with a smaller petrol tank? (Must admit mine only cost £1250, but it had done 30k more! and it came with the lpg I described.!:D) Oh and mine is considerably younger, although a similar colour!
 
TD5 all the way, however my TD5 averaged 21mpg and my v8 rangie averages 19mpg..

odd..

My 3.5 RR did 16 mpg everywhere, in stop/start traffic on my way to work or on a nonstop run via the motorway for the 10 years I had it.
3.9 disco does 18 mph average but a a 250 mile run a few years ago it averaged 22 mpg.
The 4.2. Quattroporte I had for five years regularly showed 33 mpg on the dash display but then occasionally only single numbers when it was flat out :D

First things first, early generation Land Rovers will actually fetch higher prices than later versions of the same model.
A TD300 Defender or Discovery, if in good nick, will actually be more expensive than a TD4 or V6TDi.
I can find a V6 Discovery III for €8000, or a Discovery II facelift TD5 for anything between €5000 and €10.000. Defenders are absurd, with 130 pickups selling for as much as 30K !
Why? Because you can do anything, go anywhere, and they will still work - and you'll only need a wrench and a screwdriver for a roadside fix, rather than having to rely on a rocket scientist in a white coat.

So the €4500 TD5 I showed you is on the lower end of the used car market, while the red V8 is through the roof - but mileage etc. are such the seller knows someone is bound to call...
Especially with the current economic situation, many are selling their "family toys" to make ends meet...

Don't know about the roadside wrench and screwdriver. Through nanocom, a couple sensors and an accelerator pedal in and it might be ok lol. I think a 300tdi disco is more reliable to go anywhere and be fixed side of road than a td5 defender. Although I guess a D2 td5 has a few more electricals but don't think there's anything different in regards to it stranding you (tps or cps). The amount of times someone's said to me "ahh defenders are easy though they're easy though they're like a big meccano kit". Meccano never burnt me, went into limp mode or had crusty wiring to deal with lol.

A 300tdi disco in good nick is getting rare in England now too and they do seem to cost. Really nice D2s still cost good money though.

I think the biggest killer is rust mate and personally I'd go for a 15p TD5 (or a clean 300 if theres any around) with a clean rear end and as rust free as you can find. Rust will cost you the most!

Any others caught your eye?

The seller wanted more than I was willing to spend.
The big issue with diesels in Italy (big cities, really) you can't drive through town with a Euro4 down.
Petrols can be modified to run on CNG, but diesels are stranded.
So a TD300 may be nice, and a TD5 even nicer, but they won't get you into town.

PS what's a 15p TD5?
 
A 15p td5 is the improved version of the engine. It took over from the 10p version in about 2002. Numbers are the first three digits of the engine serial number.

So you've answered your own question really if you can't drive a TD5 into Roma! Or other big towns!
So you are looking for a petrol, right, that narrows it down! Is CNG italiano for LPG? Of is it that stuff with lots of E in in it, i.e.ethanol?

here in this area (outside of UK) these are, unfortunately, realistic prices. In Hungary my car (2003 D2 with about 170kmiles) can be sold for about 7k€. For the D1 petrol the 12k€ also seems realistic as it looks really nice (probably no rust as it is in Italy) and almost an old timer now. If it were here in Hungary I would probably buy it:)

I was using the US expression for Methane...
Yes, I actually did mean LPG, which we call GPL...

The red V8 petrol is already registered as an Oldtimer, because it was OH'd by the Land Rover Register.
Will be seeing the 10p TD5 (ten pence? XD) thursday morning, but it'll be a weekend trip to the deep south to see the red turnip...

The 15P comes with a flash programmable ECU and is also EU3 emissions compliant. Cylinder head design is slightly different as well, with a single fuel rail drilling on the 15P as opposed to 2 on the 10P. I think there was also a 16P version but don't know the details for that one.

So we are singing from the same hymn sheet! My LPG/GPL/CNG runs like a dream no problems at all and far cheaper! Only problem could be getting insurance maybe? Don't know what it is like in Italia!
 
Of all my Discos, I trust the 300tdi more than both the others. Yet he isn't looking at one.:(:(:(
Yeah but I suppose we all miss the old Tdi, especially the 200 because that was so so bullet proof a motor.
Td5 is a nicer motor when its right but the 200 never missed a beat
