Hello All,

Just spent 12 months choosing a td5 finally got a 2003 one. 15 miles away from leaving the dealer the TC light kicks in. I am told faulty abs sensors. The service history shows that in June the previous owner paid £244 plus £60 fitting for the 2 rear units.

Landy specialist says at that price for the 2 they were probably the crap £50 ones you see on fleabay and have prob failed. No faults showing on diagnostic he's said so presume not the front ones?

Can anyone recommend which brand and where to get etc as I fancy doing the job myself (as I bought one to sort out myself as a hobby)

codes should show which wheel if it is , ive been using the britpart ones amongst others and have been no problem
 
I think you probably mean faulty wheel bearings..... The sensors don't usually fail IIRC. New wheel bearings mean new complete hub assembly.

If I were you I would take it back for the dealer to sort the problem, seeing as you didn't even get the car home. Sounds like an already 'known' problem.

based on the quoted statement it's not a 3 amigos issue unless the TC light stays on all the time not just for short time which means that the TC kicked in for some reason, which could be due to unproperly/differently inflated, unevenly worn or unbalanced tyres too

so first of all we must know that the TC light stays on permanently or not... and if it does are the ABS and HDC lights working on self test?

these are important things to know

being a 03 modell the pressures must be 2.1 bar at front and 3.2 bar at the rears... the ABS system was "calibrated" from factory for these pressures in standard tyres , any differencies between the pressures or standard wheel sizes(which means 235/70/16, 255/65/16 or 255/55/18) can make the TC to be erratic

Thanks for all the info.

The TC light is only for a few seconds and doesn't stay on. Just get loss of power as it backs the revs off etc.

Landrover guy said there were no fault codes showing and has just blamed the cheap bearings fitted by the garage. He's had the TC light come on when road testing but says as it over 14 mph the diagnostic can't identify which corner it is.

I will check pressures and other lights to.

actually it's not a fault so it will not let fault codes stored just that the TC kicks in due to some reason, it could be due to low quality hubs too cos the cheap ones might have wrong number of teeth on the reluctor rings and mixes up the system...the TC will put brake on the wheel which the system "thinks" it's slipping, that's how it works... remove the ABS pump relay R10 in engine bay, you'll get the 3 amigos but the car will be driveable with normal brakes without ABS involvment, when you get it plugged in again the outputs of sensors must be checked on live data maybe you can see which wheel gives the wrong input... this thing killed my nervs long time ago when i knew nothing about this and i've replaced all the hubs to fix it

this thing can occure even if the sensors/hubs are not faulty but different brand cos then the sensors can have different resistances, they must be between 950-1100 Ohm to pass the system self test but if one is at the upper and one at the bottom limit the TC will make tricks even though the system doesnt log a fault.

I'm thinking that given the circumstances (and a contribution from the dealer who has been very fair) I will just replace all 4 and use OEM units.
