Howdy,

The time has come to fit new brake lines, I intend to make my own so will need a cutting/flaring kit. I've had a bit of a search and it seems that Sykes Pickavant is the best around, however I have two problems with this:

1: I don't have a vice
2: I'm not loaded!

What is the second best option? Has anybody got any experience with this one: Land Rover Series I-III 3/8" Unf Brake Pipe Repair Kit | eBay

Brakes are fairly important so I want to get this right first time so will be avoiding cheap and nasty tools :)

Alternatively does anyone have a Sykes Pickavant they fancy lending me? :D

Cheers

I bought a cheapo flaring tool, Couldn't get good constant results so went and bought a Sykes Pickavant flare master.
Handheld so no vice needed and good flares every time.

Agreed, But I wanted something that's going to last and give me good reliable flares.
If I remember right you can get just the tool for about £100
I'd offer to lend mine if you was closer.

tried the cheap clampy ones, made rubbish flares and pipe slipped.. you could probably make them though.

bought a sp flaremaster2.. perfect everytime and you can do it on the vehicle. i'm going to buy the upgrade flares to do larger pipes.

ask the garage if they'd flare some for you.. some will do it for a couple of pints, some free

I bought mine with the 6mm flares, Not had to use them yet, But sure they'll come in at some point in the future.

You lot have done this to me before! I was considering a cheap MIG welder but the forum convinced me to shell out on a 151TE - you're bad news for budgets :p

I'm not too worried about the lifespan of the tool, I only need it once but I need the flares to be perfect - I'll need them a lot longer!

You can get just the Sykes tool for £100 or so, but I'd need to buy a cutter etc anyway...

If the Laser one will work, I may just go for that and take a bit more care when using it? Or should I plumb for the SP and sell it when I'm done?

Cutters can be gotten for a few quid, You don't need the bending pliers (Just do it by hand)
And I can't say I've ever used a de-ber tool.
But buying it to sell seems a good option, Which should recoupe a fair chunk of the cost.

nah they are useless.. i wouldn't bother keeping them

i'll give you a fiver :D

I guess you'll want free postage as well  :p

If it is just a one off job I would cut the pipes to length, put the unions on with a masking tape label stating which type of flare you need and take the whole lot to a garage and get the flares done.

Unless you are doing it every day get the cheapest you can find. The flare is only a help, the seal is made when you tighten the union and compress the pipe.
SP kit £***** local market kit P*** if it seals job is OK

i had to replace my brake lines last year and bought one of the cheaper flaring tools

http://www.amazon.co.uk/AK5063-Pipe...sbs_diy_4?ie=UTF8&refRID=17FKNPXMMB4KZM699QRJ

found it useless, on my old series hired a professional flaring tool and done the job perfectly each and every time

when i done the lines on my hippo, on pressing the brake pedal one of the flares blew out, on taking it apart found the flare had split

got a mechanic in with a professional flaring tool and he cut the flares off and redone them all.

never had a flare burst and scared the life out of me and found the cheaper tools not up to the same standards

only thing i can say is hire one if its a one off or get a garage or company to do them for you

after all its ur brakes

hope u didnt mind me saying and doesnt come across as rude
