youve all forgotten one basic thing

its for his missus.....

the only thing that matters is the colour

BBC - Watchdog: Pickup a problem?

I'd say if you just want a large family car, you can't go wrong with a Volvo.

2000-2007 V70 with the 185bhp D5 Diesel is a fantastic vehicle, and one of the safest cars around to protect you and your family.

I know there is a stigma around the Volvo brand, particularly estates, but they are truely great cars. Extremely solid and well put together, long lived and comfortable.

If ya wanted to be a bit crazier, you could go for the 250bhp T5 version :D

arrghh.... no Volvos! Im not old enough yet for a Volvo... that's almost the same as selling my Honda Fireblade and buy a BMW bike..... dont need a pipe and slippers yet! lol

This is what I mean about the brand having a stigma. Shame really, as they are awesome vehicles. At least it means they are cheaper for those in the know! :D

If you want a 4x4, but not a Land Rover, then a Land Cruiser is surely the most obvious alternative?

Something like this?

2000 X TOYOTA LANDCRUISER AMAZON 4.2 TD VX AUTO BLUE | eBay UK

About as big as 4x4s come in this country and pretty bombproof. Can't really think of anything safer than one of these, either!

that volvo that ya cant buy looked good on top gear. You should get one of them. But ya cant.:behindsofa:

skoda??????????????????? ( dont know about 4x4)
Hyundai????????????????????????
KIA thingy????????????????????

Come on we all look at them on the road and think ****e, but for the money and spec............................

lwb shogun/pajero. loads of room and reliable.
the pajero has more whistles and bells than a shogun so it depends on how much bling ya need.

Think you might have got that the wrong way around - Shoguns came with locking diffs as standard whereas Pajeros don't. IIRC Shoguns are built in either Britain or Japan whereas the Pajeros are built in other countries in the world (Cyprus I think).

Noo.. dont panic! not going away from my dear landys!!!

with the first sprog due in August I'm looking into buying another vehicle...

Besides the 90, my misses has a convertible Golf and I have the citroen C5 "tip" ( basically use her to commute to work and its my "dont give a ****" car)

So.... I've been looking to get a more like family car...as I'll be selling the misses Golf. A convertible is not an option with a massive push chair to fit in the boot..

the missus wants a Cammo defender, but I think its just not an option as the budget wont stretch to get a newer defender, and I already have the 90 that gives me enough to keep busy!

So dont want to go and buy a 110, that would have to be older and therefore more prone to problems.....

When I say family car... not really as I dont want a car, I want a 4x4, something big :D

First looked at getting a Range Rover Vogue, but gone off that idea...

So....and please dont shoot me for sugesting these, but dont think another LR is going to be an option...

I was thinking of something along the lines of a Nissan Navara, X-trail? something like that? a kind of pick up truck thingy?

does anyone have any ideas of something decent along that type?

cheers
JP

Depending on what you're willing to spend it might be worth having a look at some of the 110's here: The County and Defender Centre, Hinckley, 4x4 Sales

Bought my 300Tdi 110CSW from there for ~£8k and it's been very reliable. Only "major" issue that's happened to it was that the turbo blew up because a garage that did a service on it dropped a sump plug washer into the intake side of the turbo . He tends to be on the upper side of prices but then you do get what you pay for.

Racked up 20k on it so far in 12 months and although not as quiet as a newer Defender on the motorway it pulls like a horse up the hills on the motorway even with a huge load in the back. 300Tdi makes it nice and simples to fix if anything does go wrong.

Think he was referring to the internal electronic comforts, which the Pajeros did have more of.

Jeep Cherokee and Grand Cherokee may be worth considering. The diesels are not the most reliable in the world but the petrols are bullet proof and there's always LPG. They are also good value for money.

They are typically well equipped too.

Bloody small inside though!

uk spec shoguns had locking diffs with a limited slip diff as an option, pajero's had limited slip diff with locking diffs as an option.
mitsubishi build all the cars in japan, it's just the uk market and most of europe get a shogun, the japs get a pajero and the yanks and canadians get montero's. the reason europe get shogun's is that some bright spark worked out what pajero means in spanish:D
the older shoguns get more basic interiors than the pajero and less chrome or "bling"

thanks for the options gents, there's a lot of info there, been looking on ebay mainly for pictures and rough prices, I quite like the Mistu WLM sugested, but looks like its outside my budget

so, im now looking at the other options sugested, but its sooo fokin difficult to pick one!

go for the disco .... i swapped my golf for one .... but stay well away from Nissan / Datsun of any flavour as i have had to rescue too many people and equines with dead nissans... If you must have Japanese then Toyota or Mitsubishi.
