The common point is the lighting switch on the side of the steering wheel that has the electrical contacts rated to handle the current of the headlamps other than that it's the fuses, two for each head lamp, one for side so six in total or its the bulbs, but both together ?? and you do say the headlamp flash works.

Therefore if you have no headlamps then I would start at the switch and it's operation.
You could start shorting out the wiring but you will need a wiring diagram and/or the color codes.

on mine a wire was broke at the switch , just resoldert it , easy fix.

i shall be trying a differend switch later to day so sould sort it

just noticed u have a 540i  iv got a 540 touring what a hell of a car , just wish the disco was built as well !

yep , great car , also love the 540 touring , it's sort of the ultimate sleeper:cool: , but if a Disco was build that well it would'nt be as much fun anymore i think , i've been playing with the thought of building a 4L BMW engine in a Disco tho , would be a nice playthingie then:eek: , but at the moment the stupid laws in Portugal even not allow for a different steeringwheel in your car let alone a different engine therefor the plans are in the fridge (for now);)
