It is the electric fans running and not the viscous making the noise. They don't come on straight away in the morning but soon after and then they stay on.

I do get a picture of a book on the climate display after a while too. Are these linked? The guy I bought it off said the book icon didn't affect the running of the car and the heating and air con all worked ok.

I would suspect that the temp sender that brings the fan on is iffy (is it the black one or the brown one, can't remember?)
The book on climate display can be lots of things but if all the blend motors do what they should it might be the coolant temp sensor on the pipes to the matrix.

Thanks for your replies!
Oil cap is ok and there's no water inside on the floor.
UV coolant dye? will get some and try that one.
Have you also checked under the carpet into the foam underlay!
Try getting a look up under your steering wheel column from the foot well.o_O

I have noticed that there is pressure in the expansion tank when the engine is cold in the morning. Is this normal? The owners manual seems to think so.

Hissing when you take the lid off? Or top hose hard?
I ask about the top because my own is not a good gauge as it is a harder material than the lower hose.

Sounds like slight potential head gasket issue! Mine used to do the same. Stone cold in the morning open the expansion.....psst. problem fixed...no pressure at all...nothing. my best guess is it was cylinder pressure gradually leaking back into the system after stopping. Not enough to cause a major geyser but enough to pressurise the system.

The usual reason for the Book symbol is that the blend-motors have seized got out of position. Often they are nadgered but sometimes just stuck and (don't laugh) repeated rapid on/off of the ignition switch can cause them to "jog" and get out of their seized state and the symbol goes out. Other than this its a repair/replace operation.

There is buddy, there is a kit you can buy that detects exhaust fumes in the coolant. give eBay a try.;)

I little trick that always sorts my book symbol is to prise out the grill in the middle and spray a load of silicon lube down the hole. Don't use anything else though. Does depend on what's up though!

Will do.
put the dye in now to find the leak. will have a check.
So I've bought a P38 that pressurises and has a coolant leak i can't find. Beginning to regret my decision of buying a P38.

Don't give up buddy. I'd bought mine after passing it's inspection. (Laughing) only to leave the road at 40mph into a ditch.. worn rear shock wasn't picked up on the test!! Middle exhaust box, gearbox oil cooler and a hole in the engine sump later. I still enjoy driving it. Keep on in there. You'll get to the bottom of it I'm pretty damn sure;)

Is there any chance of an air lock in the coolant system? With the engine running and warm, take the expansion tank cap off and you should have a constant running of coolant just below where the cap sits. If not there's air in the engine!!! I found after changing my own coolant, squeeze the hose and hold, then block the little water way in the expansion tank I mentioned and let go of the hose. Repeat until you get running coolant. I hope this helps a little if at all. Be sure to check the underlay on the driver's side carpet. The o'rings on the heater matrix feed do give up and weep into the footwell leading to becm/plug problems.... Did you check the sensors on the cylinder head under the inlet manifold. They can become sweaty green and cause all kinds of malfunctions. Like the Aircon fans coming on or the torque converter not locking up!!!! Grab a strong torch and get checking around the cylinder head under the manifold.
