I can't comment on Britpart clutches, never had any experience with them but I know that Britpart gears are ok. I canvassed opinions on them over on LRUK before I bought any, the consensus was that they are perfectly serviceable and I have found them to be so... Britannica Restorations, (find his channel on Youtube) has recommended them too. If you do find another gearbox, remember the different clutch slave arrangement between series 2a and series 3. Either will fit but you will have to re-plumb your clutch hydraulics.
 
Theres a really well made video on youtube on gearbox resto I watched the other day. I don't even have a series lol I've no idea if same box as an S3 but must be similar

Personally, I would use a Valeo clutch kit, and a quality release bearing, and a stronger than standard release arm. There is quite a lot of work in changing a clutch, and you don't want to be removing it all again too soon.

The advice above about getting a petrol engine is worth thinking about, unless you can fettle the 19j quite cheaply. Land Rover petrol engines are always better than the diesels, there is less likely to be regulatory pressure on petrol in the near future, and they are a nicer drive. Myself, I would try and get a 2.5 petrol if I could, but the 2.25 is adequate.
 
Overdrive and 7.50x16 tyres will help get engine rpm down a bit and give you a higher cruising speed. Alternatively fitting a 5-speed gearbox from an early defender will do the same.[/QUOTE]

Fitting an lt77 gearbox from a defender is not really a good option as it has permanent 4 wheel drive unlike the series box which is selectable. The transfer boxes are not interchangeable either without adaptor plates which makes an lt77 and series transfer box an awkward proposition.
Bought a britpart clutch kit for my series 3 and didn't use it cos it looked a bit weak and pathetic. Valeo are expensive but worth the extra for peace of mind.
 
Any easy fixes for the cold start and smoke? Could it be as simple as preheaters?

I got new injectors and heater plugs for mine( a series 3 SWB station wagon with a 2.5N/A diesel), cost less than £100 to do and improved the smoking and gave it more power. Still annoys cyclists though but then most things do...........
 
Ashcroft make a few bits for converting a series to 5-speed in some form or other. But the simplest will always be an overdrive unit as a bolt-on option.

If you look on the gbox itll tell you the ID code for it, I bought this one to do up while i was driving my series 3 , however the Series 3 had a Dsuffix box in and the bought one was a B suffix , so i wanted to keep the later box.

it was a rite of passage for me to rebuild the box as i had wondered for years how they worked before i got the landy!
they are not too complicated and good fun to do them , te green bible is a must as is taking lots of pics as you go, for jumping out of gear it could be something ascheap as broken springs or loose selector shafts

I’m gonna rebuild one of the series gearbox (agree I’ve always wanted to know how they work) thanks Steve for the location of the code. That video is ace too, some good dry humour in there.

I’ll keep this engine for now....I’ve ordered glow plugs, injectors and valve seals so fingers crossed that gets me through the winter!

That is not entirely true. The Series 2 chassis cross member will need slight modification to fit a Series 3 gearbox with the external slave cylinder.
