Hello

Due mostly to it being reliable once I’d got it sorted four years ago, and been driving, I haven’t posted much.

It’s now reached the inevitable point where it’s failed an MOT on rust. And my wife has said “enough, it goes”

It seems a shame to simply scrap it when if nothing else it’s had almost everything replaced mechanically bar the engine and box in last 13k. Even has untorn seat bolsters (3dr). I am not interested in getting much for it - I just really want to see it keeping others going or if someone wants to weld it (Estimate for welding was £180, but as I say, she said NO!)

So if I can’t shift it here because of forum rules (<50 posts and I don’t want to just spam up threads to get to that 50), where is best to shift it as spares or repair (is it just eBay and deal with the inevitable lunatics)?

Or do I just bite the bullet and scrap man it?

Thank you in advance.

£180 isn't much to get it through another MOT.
Ebay worth a punt I guess.
Get a price from webuyanycar, my car is worth £275 apparently.

You drive it and you’ve replaced virtually everything except the engine and box, but will now let it go for the sake of £180?

Doesn’t make sense.

Does seem a bit odd. Surely it's worth spending the £180 to get the welding done, and then flog it with 12 months mot on? If the welding was £500 or something I'd understand

Looking on Autotrader, there's only six Facelift 3-door FL1 for sale right now, and cheapest is £1000, but that's the less reliable petrol. Cheapest TD4 is £3000

Surely you could get the welding done & flog it for at least £1500 with 12 months MOT.

Sorry, to clarify the welding was £180. On top of that is the work to strip it back to get it done and get the joints done. So a total of around £600 all in (call it £420 for the other work).

the problem is mostly - as objectively old hat as it is, it is a likeable thing and it does do what we want it do. It is used as a station car and if it gets a parking ding, meh….

By other stuff done, I mean VCD, proper clutch, condenser, radiator, discs and pads, shoe kit, brake lines, alternator, injectors, Steering rack, remap, suspension etc. …. Hence it’s really only main engine and box that are left!

Change of heart is to get it done. We have a fair few uses for it in the next 6-7 months so the depreciation on anything to replace it for will outweigh the repair cost… Thanks all

Put £20 note in a tin every week for a year, that help pay for any 'on going' issues that crop up, it makes more sense than selling it then pining for ages ...
