As title says, I've got an old 86" in need of total resto but no log book so unless I can find chassis number it's never going to get on the road.
 
there should be plate on the bulkhead with it on, if not try around the front spring hanger passenger side it should be stamped there.
 
Bulkhead is pretty far gone and no plate on it, have searched both front spring hangers and engine mounts not found anything. Anyone know for sure?
 
passenger side, i.e. right side as you look at the front of the vehicle, might be worth checking the rears too, mine is pretty easy to see but if the chassis has been painted a few times the numbers may have filled up with paint
 
On the outside of the chassis I take it? Everything's pretty visible shouldn't be hard to spot if it's there
 
I've found it! Like you said under many layers of paint and rust.... At least I think I've for it all but there is a big rust hole just before it starts so bay be missing the beginning?

I've got 5 numbers
 
you may be able to guess the first four, if its a '54 or '55 86 the first number should be 4 or 5 second number 7 (Land rover), third number 1 (86 inch), if yours is made for the home market the 4th number should be 0.

then the sequence changed for 1956 on but the table explains it

if nothing else it should show how much of the number is missing.

Yeah I've seen that, but what's the chance of getting a registration for it? Could guess the year etc but would only be a guess and would have nothing to back it up
 
Is it the original engine? If so what number?
Worth contacting the Series 1 club they help with getting vehicles re registered.
 
So working on the basis that I've got the last 5 numbers. That would mean that the fourth digit would be 1 and that doesn't make any sense?

The chassis numbers I can see read 16676
 
Yes I have just discovered this. Meaning if the year is 54 or 55 it will be an 8 digit number. Easy to determine the missing first three just got to determine what year it is???

If it's 56 or later is a 9 digit so will be a bit harder to figure out
