Hey folks, had noticed something this morning with my (first ever) new to me 2004 td4.

Was particularly cold and when she started she really didn’t like idling at all. I noticed it was idling down around 700 rpm ish, around where it does when it’s warmed fully up.

So my question, where should it idle at cold? Surely not as low an rpm as when fully heated? Concerned maybe mine should be idling higher but nothing to gauge it against.

So where does your td4 idle when cold started??

Cold or warm, 750rpm
I find you can make it dip slightly if you try to move the front two windows at the same time

prev. post trashed ..

took notes today .. .. ambient temp. about 6c ..
rpm display via a scangauge.2.
( steering wheel makes viewing dials a bit dodgy .. x'cept for the fuel gauge )
~~~
cold start .. 835 rpm .. 2min idling settles to 794 rpm
add 'ptc' heater .. ups rpm to 850 ..
~~~~
after 20 mile run .. engine up to temp.
idles @ 780 ..
stayed same when 'ptc' heater were 'on' ..
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
edit .. in addition:
@780 .. the Dial needle rests on the second slash marker
@850 .. it's a needle's width above that
Hey folks, thanks for all your replies. Your answers actually answer the question I had about what’s causing it.
I know the replacement injectors I just chucked in are fine as the leak off results and general all round performance of them is good.
So my dodgy glow plugs must be what’s causing it to really not like idling whenever she’s cold started.
Given she should idle down low and given it smokes in those conditions, but it is fine when it even starts to warm up it has to just be poor combustion. Super hot plugs would sort that.
Thanks again folks, I’ve been plus gassing my plugs for two weeks so far haha so hopefully next week they’ll come out no bother.
Cheers
