Vehicle Disco 2 TD5 2001. I have a broken front wheel stud (Hurricane 18 in wheels).
Looking closely at hub, it looks like this could be replaced with hub on vehicle, after removal of caliper and disc etc. There appears to be a notch, when aligned with relevant stud, at bottom of the hub rear housing plate, to allow this.
Knocking the old stud out may require some brute force, but once this is done, pulling through a new one, should be possible using spacers and a nut.
Reading other relevant threads, all seem to say "not possible". Is this really the case ? Although LR do not supply studs separately (they want £250 + for complete hub!!!) I have found a source for replacement studs.
Anybody out there, done this successfully?

Hi, You should be able to remove the broken stud as you have said without removing the hub etc from the vehicle.
I have found it on the Rave workshop disk for a D1 under the wheels & tyres section with an explanation of how to do it but can't find it in the D2 disk. Doesn't mean you can't try it though as you've got nothing to lose if it does't come out you will need to remove it all anyway.

Thanks for reply. I am sure this can be done on D1's but has anyone had success with D2? Not too hopefull!!!
I actually have a new replacement hub, but lack the tools to do a complete swap. ie v big torque wrench, hub puller, etc. The existing hub seems fine in regard to zero play etc, so really want to save time and cash with this problem. (I know garage will charge me £150+ just to do the swap!) Thanks anyway.

OK. I take it from lack of response, that nobody monitoring this forum has changed a stud on a TD5 Disco 2 front hub !! (either with hub on or of vehicle)
Well I'll give it a go and post results.
Can't believe this has not been covered before!

OK managed to do the stud replacement with hub on vehicle.

I have just broken a stud so I have 2 questions:

1: Where can you get just a stud (or even a set) rather than the whole hub.
2: How hard/easy was it?
 
Anyone got details for this? I've got the disc and caliper off but it seems impossible to get a new stud in...! Its a 1999 Disco 2 TD5

Got an MOT tomorrow and need this new stud fitted!

Can anyone offer any advice please? I haven't got the tools to remove the hub (or I would have) , I've removed the abs sensor as that seems the obvious notch the stud may fit in so I can pull it through , but the actual top of the casting is slightly too high so the stud wont fit in straight, it goes in a bit but no further and its tricky to get any leverage.

I wish Dave Mac had posted his method.... :(
 
Well an update on this is... I cant see how it can be done without removing the hub. And I tried everything.
So I've got to try and get hold of a beast of a breaker bar and socket to get the hub nut off....what a pita

Just made a useful find..and it IS possible!!
the trick is to remove the ABS sensor, grind a little flat on one side of the mushroom part of the new stud. This will allow the stud to sneak in if you align the stud hole and the ABS recess aperture. MAJOR BONUS!!!

Using the stock stud it wont align straight to the stud hole in the hub, even when in the abs recess. Its maybe 1mm or 2mm on the squint. Just got to button it back up tomorrow as its pitch black now lol

Part No FTC2057, Genuine LR, I believe they are usually sold as P38 RangeRover (1995 onward) studs. Quite sneaky considering LR say you cant get discovery 2 studs seperate and must buy a complete hub!!
