Hi,
I've got a spare set of old rims and tyres to hold up the 109 while I get the current rims primed ready for whatever colour I paint the car and the new(to me) tyres I have sourced.
As with everything budget is tight so I was wondering if anyone knew anyone close to Halifax who strips the old paint at a great low rate?
Please let me know if you have any ideas.

I've been half tempted to give these guys a shout.

I bought my own grit gun but it seems like an expenisve way to do it as the grit is quite dear....

let me know how you get on

ere dom with regards to the cost of grit just do what most of us do and use wicks kiln dried patio/paving sand

as for the paint stripping and repainting thing when i did mine on me series resto thread i just used a set of those wire wheels that fit on the end of the drill and a sanding disc in a 4" angle grinder before painting the wheels with zinc 182 primer and me own speshul blend of white household gloss paint ( the oil based stuff ) with a shot of clear coat laquer ( cellulose based ) and thinned down with high grade thinners just enough to get it through the gun without speckling then give it 2 good coats of that

when its cured fully in about a weeks time itll never chip off or scratch and is almost as good as the enamel paint on yer average cooker or washing machine :D:D:D:D

I'll look in at Wicks...should be a good bit cheaper and will sweep up easier too.

I've got red oxide and paint already from Paints and Lacquers in Halifax the other day. Think I'll be brushing it onto the wheels though I might try spraying - not keen though as it seems very faffy and I always make a pigs dick of it!

thing is with the wickes sand if it gets damp i always dry it out in a big old pan on the hob stirring it with a stick ( it does a remarkable nice finnish on things like carbs and other aluminium parts ) as its a bit more gentle than shot or wallnut shells
 
Copley Motors used to do it, but that was many moons ago, so I don't know if they still do.

There was also a small jobbing foundry in Luddenden Foot that had a grit blast for finishing off their castings.

The Simon Warman foundry in Todmorden cleaned their with grit, so if any of them are still around, it's worth nipping in the back door and having a word with the Charge Hands!
 
Thanks for the tips. If I want something more fierce - for removing thick rust from chassis say - what other stuff is useful?

Also, whats a good way of removing Tetroseal - there's a good thick layer all over this chassis but I'd like to strip it back and paint it....

is it stripped to a bare chassis

if it is i just use a roofers blowtorch to melt the stuff and run the bulk of it off with a decorating scraper then when its cooled down smother it with petrol or thinners and wipe it off with rags to the bare metal

a bloody good days graft but gets the job done ;)
 
That;s what I was thinking...it seems a shame to scrape it all off when it's only just been put on but I want to check all the welding and paint properly. Getting the time to do it might be a different matter....guess it'll be a nice stinky job too!

On the one I got from Matcal, he's done a good job welding the chassis and covering it with tetroseal. But I think I probably ought to paint it properly while Ive got it stripped right down. I'll be doing it on my own little one at some point in the distant future.

At the moment mines a mixture of holes rust and red oxide, where I've welded it, but not got time to do it right....a bit worried on mine what is behind the big lumps of filler!

those front legs and the rear drivers rail and spring hanger are what i welded for him while trying to teach him to do it properly and the rest was his own attempts ( during a few spliffs ) :eek:
 
Ah, didn't realise it were you that had done it...I'd like to strip it down to just chassis as I've spotted a few deliberate mistakes on the bulkhead like a plate welded over the bolts for the heater blower on the footwell.

Plus I'd like to paint it properly...trouble is I never get to the bloody garage...was supposed to go this morning but had double booked with an apointment with a hangover...rugby to watch now
