looking for a whel cover for my sport 18 inch alloys can anyone tell me if the genuine 17inch cover would fit i know the 17 inch soft cover fits 17 and 18 thanks in advance:D

He means that the overall diameter of the wheel tyre combo is dependent on the profile of your tyres e.g. sidewall height. You then have to compare this to is what the maximum diameter of the standard wheel/tyre is.

The Freelander range all have the same basic tyre overall diameter from the factory - ie you can fit 16" wheels to a car originally equipped with 17" wheels as long as you use the tyre size stated in the manual. This is good as you don't have to change the speedo gearing when you change wheels.

Generally the larger the wheel the smaller the tyre wall height to keep the overall wheel combination the same size.
The problem that you will have is that the tyre width usually increases with wheel size, soft elasticated wheel covers can cope with this. Hard chrome wheel covers have less leeway.

Attached should be a picture of a spreadsheet that I used to calculate the maximum size wheel that I could fit to give best ground clearance. - As you can tell I went for a 28" maximum size.
Apologise to all the younger ones who don't use inches
