Doing the front wheel bearings and brakes on my 96 def 90,
however when I took the offside apart I took the first nut, then lock washer, then second nut and then there was no thick washer?
There was very minimal play and it wasn’t noisy but just wondering if anyone knew how this could have happened?
Have ordered the washer and know how it all goes together just thought I’d share.

One quick question though, I know about cutting a slot out of the old race to use as a drift for the new outer race but does anyone know of a press set that would work on the defenders race as I feel it would be easier to do it with a pull together press kit if there was one available for not silly money.

Thanks ollie

Your first question. No surprise, bodgers get everywhere. The parts book should be the Bible!

I've always drifted them, but a 'hatchbacks' wheel bearing puller/pusher I had to get for one of the kid's cars last year would probably adapt. Deffo cut the old one for the good fit though.

This is the one I bought, you might need a bit of tube to go over the stub axle. Can't guarantee the sizes, but it's Amazon and you might've ordered it by mistake.

Use Timkin bearings and Corteco seals ...
Yes, cut the old race with a cutting disk and tap the new race in with that.

Fairly common, last couple i did (not mine) they had used another lock washer instead of nothing. Shows they were trying but still not correct!

I don't even bother cutting the slot in the old race when I drift them in. Although you might be able to press them in, I do not think it would be any quicker or easier. Unlike modern bearings they go in very easily with a few sharp taps and an old piece of round bar as a drift. By the time you have faffed about setting up the press, and getting the adapted in you could probably have finished the job with a hammer!

Cut a slot out the old race then tapped it in no bother 👍

New discs are about twice as thick as what we’re about 20 year old discs with about 80k on them - pistons got moved back in so far I didn’t even need to top the fluid up when I replaced the solid brake line between flexi and caliper 🙂
