Hi guy’s recently noticed abs kicking in as soon as you set off, called my mechanic to look at a job he wants done and asked him to scan it, showed up front right speed sensor, sometimes it clears otherwise it brings up usual Xmas tree of lights hdc inactive etc turns off abs and all is well albeit with dash all lit up. Just been having a look with my scanner at all 4 sensors and all 4 read the same, has anyone had an intermittent sensor fault? Ones iv had before have always just worked then failed. Also do the wheel bearings on bmw era l322 have a magnetic ring on them or is it separate? Only because iv noticed a noise lately when hitting brakes I get a click from front right, sounds like a sticky caliper but checked that other week and it’s all good. I do remember my freelander 2 having clicks and it was a bad bearing so I’m also wondering if the bearings have abs ring possibly that failing?

There will be a reluctor ring, if the wheel bearing is failing it could cause erratic sensor readings. Others who know you model ,of car will have more information.
 
Forgot to say my test was done up and down the driveway so Maby the sensor drops out at higher speeds. I have noticed it takes a couple of mins to bong up with warning lights after setting off.
 
It might seem a bit left field, but have you 'clattered' anything heavy or non movable recently? If so the steering sensor can intermitemtly inform the ABS system that there is a problem. The reason I mention this is that our steering wheel is about 2 degrees off centre, ANY attempt to make it line up correctly triggers the ABS warnings even though the tracking is bang on, once it is 'allowed' to recentre all is good. Friendly garage who are rather fond of our old girl (L322 2006 3.0 diesel Vogue) mentioned this and basically said it wasn't worth the time, money and effort to rectify the issue as it was doing NO harm. But the fact that it influences the ABS warning system is akin to the problem you are having, so I would suggest maybe taling out fuse 24 (think it's the same on yours) drive for a few miles and then turn off, pop fuse back in and see if the warning lights still come on.
 
Steering wheel is slightly off, this is tracking but is booked in to be sorted when I get new tyres but not hit any high kerbs lately etc and steering has been like this since iv owned it, soon as I set off abs kicks in on brakes, (quite scary as it doesn’t want to stop) then warning bongs up and brakes are fine when abs is deactivated. Mechanics Snap on scanner came right up with just the 1 fault on the car “front right wheel speed sensor”
For £30 iv ordered a new one as I’m free tomorrow afternoon so will swap it and see if it makes any difference, if not I’ll start to Check wires etc as I’m on it all weekend if weather allows doing rear hub bushes, just given them and speed sensor a good spray with Plusgas let that soak in before Saturday.
I would like to trace the click/ clunk ok braking, possibly wheel bearing or Maby ball joint, my theory is as you accelerate ball joint lifts apart then under braking and weight transfer clunks back together, can’t feel any play but sometimes even tiny movements be felt in car but not in person. It drives fine, no knock over bumps only braking. It’s had new pads and discs bit ago, the clunk started couple of weeks back but this abs issue has only started on Wednesday where it popped up in morning, second time out was fine, third time it came back, and been coming back on each trip ever since.
How’s your td6 going after its lack of drive issue?

When you get tracking done recalibrate steering angle sensor, if that's out it will kick abs in (been there done that ).

I was told by the garage that it is indeed the steering angle sensor, which has been re-calibrated twice now...I do believe the Old Girl did take a bit of a whack while it was away being filmed for a new tv series pilot but cannot prove it (didn't make the final cut so just got paid a pittance for a three day shoot!)

Apart from that the td6 has behaved immpeccably ever since and there has been no lack of drive issues at all. I got in touch with the previous owner who had a similar issue a couple of years ago, to be fair he did tell me about it when I purchased the car but I had deliberately forgotten about the mention and was also experiencing the side effects of the chemo treatment I have regularly endure which makes you forget things
.
He apparently did exactly the same as me...stopped for one minute and then restarted and was on his way. Like me he also 'forensically' investigated the problem and couldn't find what caused it but had been through a deep ford while he was in Ireland, so perhaps it was water related.
I am going to re-seal the access point for the loom that I 'exposed' while investigating the electric window problem just to be safe.
 
My td6 behaved as you described with a dying abs sensor, sometimes it would work sometimes it wouldn't,
Also check the pins exist on the plug car side mine pulled a pin out changing an abs sensor
 
Well new sensor arrived today was hoping to fit it but done nothing but rain so hopefully tomorrow it’s fine and new sensor and front pads as the others seemed a hard compound, not much dust generated and very grindy, so new Delphi pads since wheels will be off then start on rear hub bushes.
 
Update, fitted new abs sensor today and been for a drive and upto now all good, so does look to be sensor, also the click/ clunk has gone when on brake so wondering if that was the abs giving one or two pulses due to bad readings from the failing sensor, old one the screw came out lovely but sensor was seized in, ended up hacksawing what was left flush with steel hub then drilling out and cleaning hole up with emery cloth and good blast of brake cleaner, new sensor greased and fitted no issues.
