then any knackered ones will be refurbished and put back in.

I would just replace the faulty injectors. There are very few parts available from Bosch, so refurbished injectors have a mix of less worn parts from different injectors fitted to make them functional.
These "refurbished" injectors have a very short life compared to new injectors, and the spec characteristics will be incorrect from the numbers on the top. This is less than ideal, especially as a refurbished injector costs ½ the cost of a brand new injector.

hi mate

funny enough saw a set of 6 x refurbished ones for around £550 and indeed as u say that’s half of the cost of new ones

also seen some new nozzles for around £50 each , know there’s a lot more to an injector than just the nozzle, that was for the VDO injectors which I believe ford also use

I would be interested in learning what it is but to my mind listening to it and how it increases with the rev's, I would be thinking "Big End gone"

I suggested a bottom end issue earlier in the thread, but apparently it's been tested as an injector issue.
Time will tell I guess.

Ref listening to the engine I thought it sounded like a slight misfire along with the white smoke lead be towards failing injectors

think on my part it was just a lucky guess , lol , indeed time will tell

many thks and so pleased it wasn’t anything more serious and the advice was useful to u

Plse don’t think I’m trying to teach u how to suck eggs and expect u know already but indeed the 2007 onwards had different injectors , HPFP etc , along with the weaker oil pump casing, hopefully that’s already been replaced with the upgraded one

Indeed such a fantastic forum full of very knowledgeable people , alas I’ve still got a lot of catching up to do , fingers crossed it’s all sorted sooner rather than later
I am here to be taught how to suck eggs. I know my way around a 300 but this thing, I have no idea.

SO....... I have just got off the phone to the garage owner, who is on the beach in Spain!. Injectors have been returned as working fine. They are now replacing them and are going to do a compression test, thinking of possible water ingress?. The day it died was the day of a big snow melt here so went through a fair amount of standing water, although it is fitted with a snorkel.

Snorkels on d3 are not always snorkels, some are true can be used under water snorkels, but most are high level air intakes and are defo not waterproof, the main issue is the trunking in the drivers side front inner wing.
Easy way to check if you have had water ingress is to see is the air filter is wet.

Ask them to get a pry bar down the front of the engine and have a wiggle on the front crank pulley, this is the d3s main weakness.

I dont think a compression test is going to tell you anything useful, the knock is something worn/broken and is under load so the compression test could tell you that cylinder is fine, which of course the piston and rings/bore will be, it is the lower end of the engine that is the issue.

I've heard that noise before, it was a spun rod bearing.
If it was water ingress, the engine would have locked solid at the time.
Best budget for another engine. ;)

I'm thinking it's a dead disco. My worry is spending too much money on a diagnosis to be told its dead.

SO! . The Disco is no more, it is a deceased Disco.
Injectors came back as fine, they did a pressure test and various other things to no avail. They are now thinking possible oil pump which requires engine out body off and another holiday paid for by me for the mechanic and his family. Obviously I have called it a day on the old girl, another dead Land Rover in our collection. Needless to say we need another family car, that is not.going to blow up so we have now stayed away from Land Rovers and brought a.....oh no wait a minute...we brought a Freelander 2 . FFS will I never learn.

Really sorry to hear that , plus don’t know which garage told u it’s a body off or engine out for the oil pump as that isn’t true , can be changed in situ with the timing belt in around 2-3 hours

but alas if the oil pump did let go u would see the timing belt off along with a broken tensioner , would be quite evident

If u have the time breaking the D3 u can get a half decent return , hope the FL2 serves u better

A Freelander 2 is miles more reliable than a D3, although quite a bit smaller.
I'd not go back to D3/4 after owning a FL2 for 3 years. It has its week points, but at least there isn't the worry of the bottom end throwing in the towel. ;)

Sorry to hear of your issues as said oil pump is not body off it is a mornings work, but I suspect as someone else said something has spun usually only terminal if a main has spun, even a broken crank does not always write off a block the problem is the cost of the time it takes

Good morning lz gang. So after the pain of the Disco throwing in the towel, which is going on to ebay and face ache if anyone is interested!. I have a question regarding the FreeLander. It has blown 2 main beam bulbs since owning it, the connector to the bulb looks like, at some point, it has got hot and gone a bit brittle. I have just tested the volts at the battery and it is giving me a reading of 14.4-14.8 at around 2000rpm. Would this be a sign of the voltage regulator not working correctly?. It produces the same volts at idle. Thanks.

Sound sliek normal voltage.

My d3 volts rarely drop below 14.5 and are normally at 15v.

Get some new bulb plugs off ebay etc.
2 pin is normally H7 3 pin is normally H4.
