On the dashboard under the steering wheel to the right, there's a little electronic looking gizmo sticking out slightly with 3 metal contacts. What is this?

Also, the landy keys have come with some kind of buttonless fob which contains batteries. I don't know whether its a tag for an unknown alarm on me landy, or whether it's an electronic pass for the previous owners workplace or gym etc. Any ideas?

Thanks in advance for any help!

Thanks for the reply.

I think it might be an imobiliser, but I didn't have to do anything to it to get it started up. I am searching for a picture at the moment. I will nip down to the garrage tomorrow if I can't find one tonight.

It's a 1986 C reg 2.5 N/A diesel 90, is it likely to be an imobiliser, and if so, how come I can start her up without having to touch it!?

Cheers

chances are its been bypassed due to being faulty or the immobiliser kicks in if you touch the fob on the sensors, my mate has got one on his VR6 that appears to be the same ill ask him how its supposed to work, better be quick hes just chopped it in for a 90

alright, I can't find this picture :( Is there any chance you can ask him how is works anyway? I'll keep looking!

Thanks again

I will try that, but I can't until I pick her up on friday (hopefully!)
Thanks again

The three prongs on the dashboard is the immobiliser override, the Fob on your keyring would appear to be as LAZY thinks a transponder for the immobiliser.

my frontera had one of these , to start it i had to press the fob (it had metal contacts on it) to the 'gismo' on the dash and a wee red light would go out , it would then start.
seems yours doesnt work , or you need to know how to switch it on.
have you asked the previous owner?

Hi Nobber,

I haven't asked the previous owner, because I am buying it from a local specialist and have no idea who the previous owner is! The garage will be able to contact him however. The actual fob doesn't have any prongs/contacts on it, it's a simple injection moulded plastic case with an indentation to split it open with a coin (battery change). If the weather holds out, I'm going to cycle down tomorrow and have a good look!

I don't know whether I like the idea of it having an imobiliser or not! There's only one fob, and certainly no lights / led's etc. Perhaps it is nackered!?

Cheers again

if you cant get it work best buy a new
one before someone nicks it most if
not all insurance Co want one fitted
read the small print before its to late

Just an update!

I've just been down to the garage, and this thing has gone! Iasked one of the mechanics and he said that it was part of an old imobiliser that didn't work, s they've stripped it out and put a new control pannel in :)

I should be picking her up on Friday - very excited :p
I'll post some pics soon!

Well, if it's a 2.5 N/A diesel it won't be hard to immobilise the immobiliser anyway.

Let me know if you get stuck.

Cheers CharlesY,

They have stripped the remains of the imobiliser out, so it is a simple box and an engine now ;)

they usually immobilise them selves by breaking down anyways.
mine is 'immobilised' quite often.

You can fit a little switch secretly, that cust off the power to the engine stopper on the pump.

It just makes the engine that bit harder to get running, especially if YOU forget to switch it on!

Cheap and cheerful too.

Just don't forget to use it - it will also prevent YOU from firing her up!

slightly off topic but just a quick questiion.

the switch for the interior light on my 1987 90 is a three way rocker switch.

the off setting means the interior light is off. the middle setting does nothing except to turn off the dashboard lights if my sidelights are on. and the "on" setting turns the interior light on.

why the middle setting??!
