Local mechanic replaced my tyres today and when he returned the car he mentioned that the clutch would need replacing soonish. His estimate was at least £150 for the labour, about £100 clutch so getting on for £300 total.

What should I expect to pay for a clutch replacement is that a good price?

He also said I could source the clutch myself and possibly get a better price on ebay or whatever. Is there any brand I should go for or are they all the same?

Make sure you get the heavy duty clutch fork.

Any make apart from Britpart i think is ok :)

Release bearing,
Fork,

Check slave cylinder, rear crank oil seal, gearbox input shaft seal?
 
sounds like good money for the labour to me.
get a clutch kit plus fork arm too. mailorder4x4 do a valeo kit and fork for about £80ish.
 
Listen to mr. davek ...if the g-box and clutch is out anyway put a new HD fork too(and new genuine seals of course)....u will sleep much better then;)
 
£150 for labour is good mate.

i paid 90 quid for a britpart supplied AP driveline clutch for my v8 and its been spot on, used mainly for offroad. was the same clutch as what i had removed, and that had been in for about 10 years i think!
 
I live in Gloucestershire and have a TD5. I was quoted £350 for labour by a local garage and £720 by the LR dealership. The clutch parts were extra in both cases. So unless the TD5 is that much different that sounds a pretty good price to me.
 
how well do you know the mechanic..... not unknown for them to find jobs that ought to be done .....that will go on for years if you dont bother.

A good quality clutch kit and fork will be about £100 but putting in a clutch correctly is a lot of work - I doubt that the labour will be less than £250 to £300.

It's probably 6 hrs approx at about £40+vat per hour. You ought to put in a new spigot bush at the same time.
 
6hours? sounds like along time to fit a clutch? granted i've never done one but sounds like a long time!

Well I have. Admittedly it wasn't in a properly sorted garage environment but it actually took me longer than 6hrs.

Take front and back props off, remove the centre console, exhaust system, the slave cylinder pipework, the gearbox with tranny box then you are into the clutch area.


I wouldn't do it for less than £300 labour.
 
I would do a clutch for £150 labour it's almost Christmas. Even if it took me all day it's £150-£200 for a days work think about it lads
 
i was speakin to a disco 1 owner who sed its easier to remove rad, undo engine mounts and slide engine forward to do clutch.. instead of removin gearbox etc etc etc... is he talkin rubbish or does he know somethin nobody else has thought about???
 
That a gud idea and would be easier but more costs involved like coolant and hire of engine crane. But I would say it would save an hour so this would pay for above?
 
save only an hour?
went to look at a disco 1 in keighley.. was told it was over rd gettin new clutch but i could still ave a look.. guy at garage sed he was sick of the sight of it.. taken him and two mechanics, plus two he borrowed from garage next door, plus two transmition jacks...
oh and two days!
also sed he had not done one b4... lol...

5 blokes 2 days to do a clutch ?
 
There is no way it would take 4 so called mechanics two days to change a clutch unless they stepped of the rainbow bus using bob the builders tools
 
And 5 is even more or a joke how can you fit 5 guys under a disco all working in the same area are they the little guys
