After switching the engine off on a 2001 TD4, there's sometimes a whirring noise for a minute or so, from somewhere under the left hand front corner. Can anyone tell me what it is, please? Electric water pump?

Front left hand corner is where the fuel burning heater is I believe - dunno if they were available in 2001 or if you have 1.

Gosh, that's a possibility, I guess. thanks. I've had a series of VAG company cars (much more recent than 2001) which were fitted with combustion heaters to improve warmup time, but they only come on when the ambient temperature is less than 5 degrees. I only noticed this on at the end of a 10 mile run, and in this weather, that surprises me, I have to say.

Could be the FBH. It's not unheard of for the environment sensor (5°C thermostat) to fail.

You can disable it by pulling fuse 5 in the engine bay fuse box.

Thanks for that. I don't want to disable it, just curious as to what it was! I do, indeed have one. After the various replies on here, I went out and sure enough, there's an exhaust pipe for it just ahead of the left hand front wheel. I've just been out in it now and it didn't come on, but it did this morning - which surprised me as it was probably 10 degrees or so this morning. Now it's about 12-14 degrees.
