Hi all

There are some components I am not sure of on my P38A with the 2.5 BMW diesel engine. There also seems to be something missing.

What is this and what is it's function? Cruise control maybe?

Something is missing from here!!

Can't find where this hose goes!

first one .... cruise control vacuum unit should go here but some one has put another fuel filter?
second one looks like the original fuel filter unit has been replaced with an inline version and made a real gash job of it.

third looks is the EGR valve..i didnt have one on mine (97) so someone else will tell you all about that

looks like someone tried to solve an underlying prob with the fuel system...theres a lot of mods there that aren't good..
my guess was to improve fuel pressure/flow before the HP pump...so maybe a sluggish in tank pump problem?

EDIT: on second glance the first looks to be an air system as the end of the filter isn't connected to anything other than fresh air by the looks of it. maybe a mod for the egr?

First one is EGR modulator. Filter is normally open. Nothing missing. Second one fuel filter and fuel heater missing. Third one blocked pipe should be connected to one of the two pipes shown in pic one on EGR modulator. Other pipe from that should go to vacuum pipe under manifold that comes from vac pump on front of cam cover.

Cheers guy's and yes, I am finding a few botched jobs carried out by some ersehole. Since my P38 is a 1998 model, I thought that the ERG valve was fitted to later models. I am not familiar with this model and I don't know anybody with the same model, who could let me see what's under the bonnet. This would give me an idea as to how things should be. The Rave manual has not gave me any clues as yet.

I'll take a couple of pics of mine and post tomorrow mate.

EGR came in in 1998.

Hope these help you out.
I have a nanocom for the diesel p38 if you need it plugged in anytime.
You can see the blue striped black pipe goes from your EGR valve to the unit mounted on the bulkhead.
And hopefully you can see the bit that is missing from the other pic.
Should be easy enough to get from our sponsors or another LR breaker.

Cheers Rodntod, much appreciated. I think I had sussed where the hose went, but was not too sure. As for the filter housing/heater, looks like I may have to get the proper fittings for the fuel line as some butcher has hacked them off.

I might take you up on your offer regarding the nanocom, as your not that far from me.

Thanks

Billy
