When you say it's a fiddle Neilly in what way?

I note the chain based products above but I'm not sure the chain will go round the back of the filter properly as there is a protruding nut on the engine which is very close to the filter itself?

Would a rubber strap based product work better for grip? (No sniggering at the back there!!)

I ended up using a screwdriver and hammer but it was messy and difficult to administer becUse there is so little room to swing a hammer in there.

I'm going to change the oil every few months now so hopefully the filter will just turn if i look at it but nevertheless I'm up for making life easier if I can.

getting the nylon strap around the filter and tightening it enough to then grip is easy enough, then you need to attach the ratchet , Iirc, I tend to use an extension on a 3/8 drive ratchet to clear an are the handle can be turned enough to gain a final grip and allow the turn to be enough to release the grip of the filter. Then it is a case of take it off and aundo by hand.

Then it is the fun of removing a filter while navigating it thru the gap provided.

SO, not difficult, just LR designed making life difficult...LOL.....All this is on a D2 TD5 Btw.

I see there enough room to get a strap wrench in?

I've just googled them and many look to be quite bulky at the head which makes me wonder if one would fit.

The reviews on the ones with very small heads aren't good suggesting they often snap.

Which one have you got that both fits but doesn't snap?

The strap on mine is a nylon webbing,fits in tight spots and is strong.Have used it to turn threaded pipe where a wrench would not go.
 
Reference your damp air filter, there should be a 'dump valve' in the pipework from the wing to the air filter box, if this is stuck (mine was) then excess water can't get out of the system before it gets to the filter. I'm no expert but it doesn't look the best design in my opinion
 
I don't know how inhospitable the engine bay is on a td5, but I use a 500gr yoghurt pot (usually empty) to drop my oil filter into and remove from the bay which save a lot of mess. Previously a 2L ice cream tub worked well as it sat on the axle/steering bars directly below the dripping filter as I removed it. Sounds liked you have less space than that though..
 
Sadly yes saltlick. The filter is in a daft please with naff all room around it. I think the pliers above might work so I'll get some of those and see next time.

Wireman - Will be checking the dump valve that you mentioned out this morning.....
 
I have a claw on a ratchet type filter tool, dunno about a td5 but its got me out of many a muddle, dont tighten the new one up too much, hand tight is usually enough.
 
I use either of these, on Def 90 TD5 no prob's at all, you only need to get it started, then by hand etc.

First is around £8, (called a LR TD5 disc/def oil filter wrench on ebayfing.

Second is a Sykes Pickavant, (the mutleys nutleys in my opinion) around £15

Both work really well.
