i will do !!

do you think/should i be confident everything else is ok ? he said it all seemed ok , tomorrow it will be on the ramp in his garage with his boss there, whos very fluent with all things land rover, so il get them to give eveything a good inspection and do the diff oils, grease everything up down there...is there anything i should specify them to test and grease up ?

thing is...i rarley drive over 3k revs, do not accelerate hard, potter along the motorway around 60 mph taking time to get to 60 , so i dont really know how long its been going for, as it was only in the last 2 weeks ive noticed it, noticed it a bit around 10 days ago, then went to spain for a week, came back, 2nd day at work (of it being driven) and this happened...

is there any way i can test a used one ? would there be a varying degree , or is it a ...either good or bad type thing , ie can you test/move it for wear etc ?

If you are talking a S/H prop shaft U/Js should be free moving with no play whatsoever in them? Look for good seals to trunnions and no evident rust in those areas. Put some grease into it if any signs of rust being expelled as grease oozes out no good. Or haggle, if it's cheap get it but change U/Js.

i can get a prop with uj and bolts etc for £50 tomorrow from martin o toole in romsey ( ebay id r-r-parts-ltd ) , would a good used one be ok ? i can collect that tomorrow take straight to mates garage and hel do it tomorrow

or theres a brand new one here for £104 ?

New UJs cost barely more than a tenner, so you could have the best of both world, a s/h prop with new UJs for less than the cost of a new prop.

ok got ya, im actualy driving past where it happened later....i think im going to pull in hard shoulder wheree it happened and have a look see if i can see the prop by centreal reservation or on the verge

can i get ujs local tomorrow ? i presume not the thing loocal motorfactors or euro parts would have in, is there 1 or 2 on the front prop ?

also , to save a new thread....

diff oil front and rear...what oil and how much would i need ?

and same for gear box, im thinking just do the lot, is the transmission box serpate with its own oil in that too ?

Would not bother looking for the prop it will be well and truly foobarred. Two U/Js on the prop.

ok thanks, iil ring round in morn just on off chance i can get some local

how about the fluids ?

Gearbox transfer box separate and both Transmission fluid. Couple of gallons will do both and leave plenty for top ups. Axles EP 80/90 a gallon will do both and leave some for top ups.

thanks whammers

EP 80/90 , is ep a brand or just what the oil is called ? i thought i read dextron or something somewhere

EP = Extreme pressure. Dextron is transmission fluid that is a trade name any ATF carrying the spec will do.

As the clutch was done a short while ago, it's possible that the prop bolts were never done up properly when that job was done. It's still important that you test the VCU, you have been told a number times how to do it with no prop in place.

Dramatic like a soap ! , can't belive one end of a prop can fall off and not know about it before smashing things to bits Especially if the back end dropped first

Think it may well have been the front that gave first. I too would be extremely surprised if it has not dented a few things on it's way to oblivion. Silly lad for driving it in that state. Seeing as how it had been evident for two weeks. But he learned something. :):)

i've had a pulley fall off from power steering on a car before. That made enough of a mess underneath. Cant believe a prop comming off made NO damage

:eek: are you guys crazy ? you think i was driving it around with a prob hlf hanging off ???

as stated - i drive mostly keeping under/around 3k revs, rareley give it any hard acceleration and potter along at 60 on motorway,. noticed a slight bit of vibration before i went on holiday for a week, came back , drove once to work fine, bit of a rumble/vibration when going over 3-3.5k revs, but was 4 wheel drive etc- bolts or something on uj were on its way then obviously, but it wasnt off, as it was 4WD still and all as normal just that vibrating around 3.5k

then it went that next morning when the uj gave way

anyway, got a prop today and brand new bolts, its all been done and feels nice now, very lucky escape really and a lesson learned

not really any damage, one uj had came apart, and 1 of the holding top bits on the rear had broken/snapped

only damage under there is on the "finns" of the cross member one of them has took a bit of a hit and is bent/scrapped a bit but nothing to worry about, everything else is ok

Had a prop fall off a tb10 whilst over Reading had to do an emergency landing :D

 Been looking on Utube at mad crash compilations (the best are from Russia) from dash mounted cameras. Some are stupid some funny and some unavoidable! our friend could have been on one of these - ever had a front prop dropped off in front of you on the road!! don't think about it.
In past life have lost a wardrobe off a roof rack - amazing no damageto it or others! Also when first married and going to work in Jag 3.4 the exhaust fell off, we got out and dropped it over the hedge
Once Dad said "look drive over there" (into Kwick Fit type place) as the exhaust on the Citron Safari was draging on the ground and about to go. They put the old one in their exhaust museum in the waiting room because it had been repaired with everything including baked been tins - might be a good idea to start a Thread - Whats your most embarasing bodge etc?
