looking at prices another d1 diesel looks best option pricewise and what ive experienced are easyish to work on ! best buy misen a welder and get practising :D

True mate noticed a cpl of places which need a plate over but at least if I get another I get dbl the practice lol :D

Try a series 3. They are cheap on eBay and you normally get your money back. I'm on my 5th and have never lost a penny.

What are prices for parts like on a s3 and are they easy to work on and learn to off road in ?

coil sprung defenders are overpriced compared to a disco 1..... series might bea s cheap as a disco but are a tin box on cart springs. apart from the comfort/noise /draught issues remember the series is mechanically a 1940,s design only part time 4wd, (no centre diff), no power steering, only a 4 speed gearbox.... .
if youre running two landrovers it makes sense to have them mechanically similar so your collection of spare parts and service items fits both.....

Why not just give the missus the grand. Either she can buy herself a corsa and you have the disco or simply as a straight pay off to let you off road it.

get a old defender 90 td /or a disco 1
as you you wont get a 300tdi or 200tdi for that money
or buy her a run about if you cant put your foot down

You won't get a 90 for £1k. If you do it will probably be an MOT failure.

You could squeeze a series 3 in at £1k. Spent £1200 and you should be able to get something with a reasonable ticket on it.

get a Jimmy , theres a fred going on the subject

Brave suggestion on a Landy forum!

He won't get a Jimney for £1k. They start at about £1500 for leggy models.

However I can't deny that they are brilliant little cars. Drove one off road in Cuba and I thought they were great. Lots and lots of warning lights on the dash though!

Have you thought of a Pajero/Shogan?? My friend is currently using one he got off me for £500, we stuck some mud tyres on it and it goes down every lane no problem, a SWB is preferable but the LWB will still do all but the craziest paths

They are uber reliable and very well priced, loads of spares available and SWB generally comes high spec i.e. rear LSD e.t.c.

Got LPG on mi berlingo and it's a pain keeps switching off for no reason so a diesel is a must ! Want to drive it to places not trailer it :D
