I say hold your cards (cars) until you know what's what.

I think this is my recommendation too.

Sell the L322, it's bland and can easily be replaced.

You've modded the 110 to make it more comfy, the 90 is 'hers' and the beemer ain't worth anything other than to you as a reliable car, simply 'cos no-one wants them any more!

I agree - If one of them HAS to go, then the L322 - largely because its the most complex and the most expensive to fix, and probably the one that will least like being unused for any period - I've a few mates with beemers, and a good one seems to stay a good one without too much hassle.

BUT, what do I know!?!? my disco did 4500 miles between MOT's this last time, the wifes Pug about 6000, so ??? We're not really "car" people.....

First off I think you are lucky, like me, that the GF loves the 90. My Mrs loves our Defender, in fact its her name on the log book and her daily drive to work (not at the moment tho! )
The Beemer would be the first to go for me. As has been said above, I don't agree that it's a keeper cos its not worth much and a good spare. A fella over the road from me likes his big BMW's but they always become expensive millstones.
The L322 would be the next to go (Tho that would be a sad day) I'd try to keep it if I could manage it.
If the GF got pregnant and I couldn't afford all three, I'd put the 90 on a SORN and keep it the corner of your garage.

She will almost certainly get pregnant again. Miscarriage is incredibly common although not often talked about. Usually it has no bearing on getting pregnant again. However, the 90 is her dream car. Not all 4 of you will fit but that's what the L322 and at a push the beamer are for. I'd probably have kept the 110 myself but it is her opinion that counts and there's more than enough space elsewhere should the inevitable happen. Pity really as I might be able to shift the 90 for you!

7 series are actually nice cars, I'd be more likely to sell the L322, but personally keep all 4 and SORN 1

I still do like a large RWD saloon
 
Can I see a pic of the inside of the 110 please? Sounds interesting.
It has manual seats from a P38 in the front and the P38 seats in the rear. I am 6'3" and I fit very comfortably in the front and the leg room in the rear is adequate and not as bad as the photo looks....

Ant, if it's just down to space I would sell the BM, If it's down to cash I would sell the L322 and cut your losses as it's going to depreciate (did you change the tranny in the end) as you have comfort and speed in the BM and comfort in the 110, the BM wont depreciate any more and the 90/110 will most likely start to creep up in value.
Failing that, sorn and store if you can any of them.
I think with cars its better the devils you know as buying a different car you could go through the whole process of fixing them up as you have already done.

If i was to buy another car to run alongside my L322 it would be a 90, they couldn't both break down at the same time surely.. and I am fortunate to have a company car if I ever need to do any serious miles.

Feck now i don't know what to do.

OK, keep the 90 (and indirectly the wife), keep the L322, keep the BM if you have to and sell the 110 and make some cash out of it.

Enjoy making babies, if it's meant to be, it will be..:)
 
Personally I wouldn't put young children in a Defender because if the worst happens they have very little rollover protection and no crumple zones so I would keep the RR and the Beemer.
I wouldn't be able to live with myself if..... just because I liked a particular car.

That's true but a nice rollcage could be fitted to the 90 PDQ. After that maybe a snorkel and a winch ...
 
Amazed the P38 seats fit in the Defender. The seats in my 90 were horrible and didn't go back that far without hitting the rear cab wall.
 
Never owned one but the 740 must be awesome.
If my wife didn't have a problem with rwd - living in the north pennines - a v8 luxury bimmer would be on my wish list.
We once faced a similar quandary and got rid of the ex aa 110sw 300tdi. We both still regret it. It was so versatile, capable, comfortable compared to a 90 and I could fit in it.
The discomfort of using the 90 long distance (50th if I may be so smug) meant it followed suit eventually.

I carried on with my rrc but my wife ended up addicted to Subaru with a forester xt auto. Can't say I blame her and it certainly gave me a chance to shift the ground in oil and grease from my hands.
We are looking for a 3.0 or 3.6 outback now.

So I was going to vote for the 90 to go, but in all honesty, how are you going to save for your family's future with an l322 sitting outside, get rid of both
 
X1 WSR. Even at that, your clearly into Landys so why keep the Beemer its a potential money pit. Think longer term. If you end up with two kids the RR isn't ideal either. In that world having three Landys is practical? You may end up comprising to the 90/110 and a family people carrier .
 
A huge debt of thanks to everyone who has posted their thoughts, it really does help to see clearer and get unbiased, unemotional and honest guidance.....myself and my other half were too close to the subject to make a rational and logical decision as we could both make arguments for and against all the cars we have.

We live in a small place with permit parking in the residential car parking behind our place of which we only get one pass (as we have a garage, they reckon we can park 2 cars and such is considered enough!) but as none of the cars we own fit in the garage, the Ninety is kept in the secure residential car park, and the other three are parked up the hill on a side road, so we don't have space for all of them.

We both read the posts with an open mind (LZ never ceases to amaze me, even after nearly 8 years, the depth of knowledge and humour is not found anywhere else in t'internet!!), she has made up her mind.

To paraphrase her comments:

I am a mum now and I have to think like a mum, the Ninety is great at the moment for just me and Summer (our 21m old Daughter), but if we do have another, the Ninety is impractical and won't get used [as it is not LEZ compliant I (Saint.V8) can't take it to work] so will just sit there and potential just rot to nothing!

Also if we don't manage to have another, and Summer starts going to school and when I go to pick her up, if she wants to bring a friend back for tea or a play date etc, I won't be able too as I don't have the spare seating for it.

It has always been my intention to get back into my photography [She is an award winning, published photographer] when Summer gets a bit older and we can go out and take my gear and get back into it again, but in the Ninety, there is no secure and waterproof boot to transport the gear in. Also if we get covered in mud and stuff [as she normal does when she goes photographing nature!!] I have nowhere to get changed or swap my boots etc.

I think it is time for the Ninety to go....we have had fun with it and I love it with all my heart, but I must be practical. I think we'll keep the Range Rover, the 110 and the BMW. I hate to make that decision cos we waited a long time for the right Ninety to come along at the right price, but it is the least practical and I can only see whatever the future brings for us, it will get less and less use.


So whilst it is breaking my heart and I am upset that she is letting her Ninety go, as I know how much she loves that car (and there will be tears when it finally goes - from both of us) I think we have made our mind up.....She will take on the Range Rover as she says it is the only other car she would want if she can't keep the Ninety, and I will use the 110 daily. The BMW (which is worth about the same as a packet of Walkers Crisps) will stay until a large bill comes up and then we'll donate it to the local fire service for training.

The Ninety will be the one to go......

Just as a side note, would the 740 share its block with a bmw engined petrol l322?
It is the same engine....there were minor differences to accept the front diff casing on the sump and a revised oil pick up for the extreme angles LR wanted to subject it to, but yes it is basically the same 4.4 litre M62TUB44 engine in both......and the Range Rover is quick for a 2.5 tonne brick, put the same engine in a car that is more aerodynamic and 600kg lighter and the 740 is a fecking rocket!!

The earlier 740's were the M60 engine at 4.0 litres.....
