Hey guys, still on the hunt for my first discovery. This has popped up local to me;

What do u guys think? Looks tidy from the outside, interior looks like it's had a hard life (he's said itl be cleaned up). 160k seems about the average mileage for these ATM.

Would it be cheeky to offer 1600?

What would the modular wheels be worth?

LIM puts these discos at 1600 (good) - 2500 (mint)
 
U Need to inspect it.
All or most look good in photos, its the bits you can't see, you need to be lying on your back checking the bodywork

Of course I understand that, a lot of people have said pole with a screwdriver, is a private seller really gonna let me take to the underside of his rover with a long screwdriver?!

Obviously there will be rust, but if there's only surface what sorta money are we talking?!
 
Take somebody with you that knows D1's as they are prone to chassis rust. Ideally get it on a ramp, don't offer any money until it's had a proper check over. Read the 'buying a crock of ****' on here (home page). Look at the sellers feedback, not looking good where cars are concerned (even though he's only sold one). Oh yes, put your location in your profile, nobody can help if you don't say where you are. It's your decision, just don't be too hasty, good luck ;)

If they won't let you then they know its rusty, me and my mate went to get one for him. 94 300 tdi auto had loads of welding only needs a small patch on one sill few small things like little dints and driver door handle broke, £700 with 4 months test I think but no tax

E says its local and its in devon so I'm guessing devon

Nigel, sorry mate but i think you are hugely mistaken. The D1 is not prone to chassis rust at all in fact they are renowned for their chassis always being solid, now the body on the other hand, well the boot floor, the inner wings, the rear wings, the rear body cross member, the bottoms of the door pillars and the sills are all made of preformed rust at production stage sadly.

but thats nowt a good session with a mig and some steel wont fix, so in short the chassis are generally good but the bodies like to turn to rust before your very eyes.


I love mine to bits but it is a rot box that needs constant fettling.
 
Thanks guys, yeah il be honest I'm confident enough clambering underneath with a good torch but it's knowing what should look right etc. got a mate with a disco but he's always busy, any volunteers for help lol?

I did look at his feedback, gearbox problems and ripping a pregnant women off, that's what's put me off till now tbh, went to a dealer earlier for a jap import but someone had beat me too it!!

I also wouldn't be confident knowing if the 4x4 side is working!! 2 gear sticks is a lot to take in lol, never had a 4x4

I half agree. :lol:

The chassis isn't prone no, but quite often the bodywork rots so bad and the corrosion spreads to the chassis.

When ever I view any landrover I always take a hammer and a big screwdriver with me. No ones stopped me yet, Although I wouldn't start making feck of holes in the chassis (That's just taking the ****) I'd just walk away.
 
Lift the carpets if you can, drivers floor and and boot floor especiallly rot.

Take a look at the wheelarches when you open the rear doors they are prone to rot there and as its close to seatbelt mounts are an MOT failure.

Open the bonnet and inspect the inner wings, they rot.

The chassis are usually OK but check for obviou rot, especially round the fuel tank.

Also check the sills for rot.

Does it have sunroofs? They were always prone to leaking.

This is extreme but this is what you can sometimes find behind the shiny Ali body panels

£1600 is a fairly good bet for that age.
 
That first one at £2k :eek::eek::eek: £1k maybe £1200 if it's a good one at best. and for that you'd want 12 months mot and some tax.

Are the early ones known for problems? I get the impression the td5 engine isn't rated as good as the 300tdi??
 
Bodywork is better on a D2, but then you have to watch the rear chassis for rust ;)

They also have a bit more electronics installed too - you don't want any warning lights on the dash when driving around - search the "3 amigos".

Oh, the two levers on a D2 are easy - the big one's gears 1 to 5 and reverse, the little'un's for when you go offroading/green laning and need low box. No difflock to worry about as the traction control sorts things out. (Having both a centre difflock and TC is the better option & involves a bit of jiggery pokery, but hey get used to a 4x4 first. Sage advice which I followed; I still get amazed at what my stock D2 does)

TD5 is great IMHO, but you can get oil in the injector wiring loom and there was some trouble with early cracked cylinder heads.
 
Ok guys been having a long hard think, dont think im gonna risk a td5 as my first landy, too much to go wrong and special equipment to worry about. Gonna keep it basic, gonna go with a tdi based wagon. Figure even if I buy half a ****ter atleast I can have a go at fixing it.

What do u think, mileage was the main thing that stands out, 222k is a big number one that I certainly wouldnt entertain in most cars... have had a chat with the guy and he said its been well looked after and u wouldnt think it had that many miles.

Also he said it had some welding last mot to rear arches, patches on sills and rear crossmember, didnt mention the boot floor, but gives me plenty to look at on sat..

What would u pay for a vehicle this old with mileage like that presuming the chassis is solid in most areas? I was thinking of offering him £1100 and going no further than £1200, figured that at that sort of money even if it has a few faults its not a big loss...

Your thoughts?
 
Can you weld? If not then be very careful with any disco that age. As others have said they can drive great and look brilliant but can be rotten underneath where it can cost 100 s to repair.
