From the original post the question was "I'm after a mid range winch and bumper.."

not "what's the best winch for reliable occasional use"

Which is a good answer, but not to the question asked ... ;)

who said we had to answer the question that wus asked ?

Reet so after the weekends escapades and getting me hungover mates to rescue us im after a tirfor. They simple enough to use?Wheres the best place to get em?Do i need any training or maintance on em? A complete buyers guide and some cheap examples is all Im after!Cheers!

doubt if there is simpler winch to use, a good breky does help sometimes

ebay is where i've got all of mine, keep your eyes open and you'll get one for 50 quid complete look for the 2500 or 5000KG versions, ex construction works are fine

if it gets muddy wash it off with water then WD40 it

really isnt much else to say

welcome to the sensible reliable winch owners club

So squadie proof technology and at £50 it would be cheaper than calling me mate out twice -it'd be rude of me not to buy im a drink or two....

I've got a Samson rope hoist. It's rated at 3200kg I think and with a snatch block it will pull most things. They're good winches, pretty much bomb proof. Once you understand them they're so easy to use, there's only three levers on them, one to pull, one to winch out and one to release the cable.

Tirfor everytime easy to use easy to service cheap to repair (worst thing that acn happen is a snapped shear pin) can be moved from 1 vehicle to another or front to back. won't flatten you're battery. can be used regardless of whether the stuck vehicle's engine is running or not.

If you leave the stuck vehicle ticking over in low 1st or 2nd it'll reduce some of the effort required to pull it uphill. also use a snatch block and it'll reduce the effort needed as well
