Ok guys,
Following on from the last, I am looking a possible hippos for the wife.

- she seems swayed towards to 3dr as oppose to the 5dr. Other than missing 2 doors are there any substantial differences in performance and interior or kit etc?

- secondly it appears easier to get a better deal on car above 90k miles as you pay quite a lot more for those around 70-80k and there are not as many.
With service history is 90-110k an issue?
The car will do around 17k a year and I would like 5 years from the car so would 200k be possible from the car really?

I am aware of the vcu and ird issues so will watch for any history on these.

There are plenty of 200,000+ miles Freelanders out there so yes this is achievable.
Difference performance wise, between 3 and 5 door, I shouldn't think so. They are the same wheelbase after all, so like you say, the only real difference is the number of doors, although the 5 door may be slightly heavier, but not by much .
I'd rather take a high miler with service history than one with 20,000 miles less without service history for a higher price.
There are plenty of 3 door face-lifts for sale at the moment with 80-130,000 miles on the clock at very keen prices so you don't have to jump in and buy the first one you see.Wait a month or 2 and the price will drop again once spring is here. Be patient and you'll get the Freelander with the right mileage, colour and above all the price........
 
From looking at pictures the 5 door has more in the way of upholstery whereas the 3 door is a bit more utilitarian (smaller door cards mean exposed painted metal on doors, same on B pillar). But you can still get the same toys on both I believe. Massive amounts of space for rear seat passengers.

I hate to say it, being a 3 door owner, but the 5 door looks a bit "posher".

My TD4 has about 120,000 miles on the clock and it's still running sweet despite not being looked after before I bought it.

Yeah I plan to buy in the spring, even if I sell the wife's alfa now I have 3 cars so I'll let her borrow one until we get the right freelander.
I am split, I like the 3dr and 5dr but both with all kit, leather etc and I am informed it must be silver grey or black :)

Even though I like the less seen colours
 
As far as I can see 3 doors are cheaper but the doors are enormous, makes them more awkward on carparks.
 
3 hippos in the family my wife and daughter both have three door TD4s both now over 160000 I have a four door L series just short of 200000, All in all prefer the three door
 
im a bit late in here but my 3 door is great. i think it looks a bit sportier than the 5 door and mine is the top of the range one with everything including heated seats, leather, heated and power fold mirrors...it goes on

the doors are enormous so it can be tricky in car parks i have to admit. there isnt lots of space in the back for passengers, there is acres! same story for the front.

I originally wanted a 5 door but im glad i didn't now for a few reasons.

1. Looks better than the 5 door with the hardtop and roofbars on
2. less of the window regulator issues to worry about
3. less of the central locking issues to worry about
4. cheaper than the 5 doors
5. its just me and my girlfriend in it most of the time. no need for rear doors.

i have attached some pictures that might help you decide if you haven't already. When its clean and all the black is waxed it looks really good. ignore the rubbish, it has been used a lot recently. 600 mile round trip from portsmouth to middlesbrough, didn't struggle at all.

as for the mileage it all depends on what model you get. i know the 1.8 petrol was refined but i would still stay away from it, the L series diesel might be decent but eeh. if you want it to have lots of life left, its difficult to go wrong with a TD4, as long as it has a service history and you test drive it to check everything you should be golden. you can get a ronbox for it too that really livens it up. Plus you dont have to change gear as much.
