Afternoon
I have a 300tdi 3 door originally bought to transport myself and fishing equipment around.
Little did I know it would be should a big hit with the family. We regularly go on mild green lanes and have camping meals out init.

I completed a lot of welding on the vehicle to bring it up to a decent standard but I feel like I'm spending more time welding it than enjoying it.
It is also a pain getting 2 kids and a baby in the back.

I've been looking at getting a disco 2
My question is at around the £5k mark what should I expect rust wise?
That last thing I want to be doing is spending all my time under another car.
I would be looking at 03/04 reg
I hear alot of reports of rotten rear chassis what should be expected of the average car 03/04 reg ?
Thanks

You've already said it sadly, a rotten chassis!
If you budget say £700 odd for a replacement back 1/3 chassis and are then prepared to put up with all the electronic problems you get with Disoc 2s that you don't get with D1s, plus the warped exhaust manifolds, and the oil pump bolts that may or may not come undone inside the sump, plus the leaky sunroofs which cause electrical problems too and the problems with air suspension, and ABS/3 amigos, Then go ahead and get one!
I've got two disco 1s and a TD5 disoc 2, and although the Disco 2 drives very well and holds more as the boot is a bit bigger I prefer my Disco 1s. But then I have a seven seater 300tdi.
It has been said you can put a non rusty D2 body on a D1 chassis which might solve your problem and not give you all the other headaches.

never seen it done but apparently all you have to do it extend a bit of the chassis, there must be articels/threads on tbhis somewhere,
Can you not find a decent 5 door Disco one anywhere? You ought to for that money.

I didnt know if her later ones at that kind of price would have decent chassis.
I would consider a 5 door but it would have to be mint so I didn't have to do any body / chassis work

Sadly they all have the same chassis design, even the facelift ones. They lifted the face not the undertrollies!!!
Seems such a shame you have done all that work on your D1.
If you have room to store it I'd take it off the road and keep it properly stored and maintained until the kids grow up, but then with a baby that will take a while, longer than my lifetime left!

Anyway, 3 here might do you and one ad for one like yours which shows yours get a premium now and you could flog yours to pay for the new one.

All rust free probs and the jap ones are usually very good.
don't give up hope mate!

I knew they had the same chassis, or only a small changes. I was meaning more along the line of them being in better nick than early TD5's because of the age and price.

Its a shame there isn't really any alternatives to disco 1 or 2s at that price range.

There will be ones out there that are not too bad and the odd one that has belonged to a "woke" owner who has treated the chassisn from new, hold out for one of those if you like, but the chassis condition will be reflected in the price.
The one I bought had led quite a sort life and although 2000 did not need chassis repair until last winter.
You don't fancy any of the D1s in the adverts then? ;););)

I`ve literally just got a 2002 after lift for 1400GBP - with few issues but certainly a healthy chassis.
In RoI you`d easily, easily find at least somewhat reasonable TD5 and I assume the market is only bigger over
the pond... Am I wrong thinking that 4-5k GBP will get a decent selection of good enough TD5`s?o_Oo_O
After all once sealed there should be no rust for years to come and the common spots for rust, being the back legs,
are easy enough to asses prior purchase.

There's some crackers there but 8k and I don't fancy a v8.
I mean would love one but I wouldn't love filling it up ! Haha

Put "rust free" in the search and this is what you get!

My V8 D1 is LPG with 4 tanks. but some of the ones I put up in my first post show ones in your price range, did you see both sets of ads?

I won't be in the position to buy another until I've sold mine. I had no idea the family would love it so much.
I would love a 110 but there massively out of my price range at the moment.
Well if your three door is in good nick you should get good money for it, as posted earlier.
I can't see the attraction myself!

This buyers guide is 2017, so a bit old and prices are wrong, but advice is sound althought they do not mention the oil pump bolt.

They aren`t wrong you`re just looking at collectible-level prices by and for Land Rover enthusiasts...
''Rust free'' in search engine is hardly an enchantment of the dark Land Rover wizards guaranteeing absence of rust... :D

I've seen a few of them. they look good on the surface.

I'm going to have a look at one this weekend at a garage, to see what kind of rust can be expected at my price range.

I see galvanised chassis are being produced for the disco 2s now. I can see in a few years disco 2s with galvanised chassis being the only affordable non defender option.

Would you consider a disco 3 at the 5k price range? yourl ooking at good examples of disco 2s and old disco 3s?

Anyone think the Disco 1 or 2 will end up as classics, and the price will start to rise ? My lads looking for a Defender, but the prices seem to rise on a weekly basis...

I've had a good think and I think im going to get another 5 door 300tdi rather than a disco 2 or 3. The only thing I really need is 2 more doors!

I reckon disco 1 will definitely start Appreciating in value. If you want a simple large 4x4 that's cheap for parts whats the alternative? I've tried to have a good think and I cant think of any.
