So I've just sold my P38, and with the money now burning a hole in my pocket, I'm now tempted to buy and restore a series 3.
My only issue is that I've been offered a truck cab series 3 for a good price but I'd really like a station wagon.... are they hard to convert and work on? Is it worth it or would I just be throwing my money away?
 
I can't offer any advice here as I've no experience of restoration but I admire your choice of a S3 station-wagon. My last 'real' LR was a '79 ex-AA example with the 6cyl engine which I changed for a P5 with the Westlake head. A Stage One V8 SW would be top of my wish list but at my age I'm unlikely to forfeit the comfort of my RRC :rolleyes:
I'm sure others here will be able to offer advice & encouragement, good luck with the project should you choose to embark on a restoration.
 
It's not hard to convert although you might have to wait for some parts to come up. But I think it would be cheaper to start with a station wagon
 
I would wait and get an original station wagon. If you tidy up/ restore an original it'll be more desirable should you want to sell it later on.

I happen to know that a pair of 88" CSW side panels will be on eBay in the near future. A reasonable roof too.
 
Thanks for the words of encouragement and advice, I shall wait until a station wagon comes up......... I still have a nagging doubt that I'm basically just throwing my money away on a project, does anybody have any advice on talking a project??....... I have experience of working on cars and my garage has a pit so it makes things easier, but apart from rust and welding is there anything that's difficult to master and get working on these ??
 
Save up for a genuine SW! Prices aren't ridiculous, as the demand is for Defenders and S1s and 2s ( generally speaking ).

I agree with bluedog333 about the desirability of Defenders, S1's and S2's. The S3 is not as attractive, for me anyway. However, even though you will spend a lot of money on a restoration project I don't think you will be throwing it away. So long as you are sensible with your spend, you should end up with a vehicle worth at least what you spent on it and probably more. It's an investment as well as a challenging and rewarding thing to do.
 
I love the s3 109 SW, if I had the money and the missus would let me, I'd have a v8 with original spec. Will be a very desirable classic one day.
