JAMES MARTIN IS THE MAN !
that works then cause i pm'd him the video of the internals of the t/box. just waiting on a reply. if i get a chance tomorrow i'll park it on the flat sort my cam somewhere and push it with the hand brake on to show that movement its a LOT but has always done it since i've had it.
(same with the clunk but the clunk seems to have got a bit louder with the work i've put it through)

Sounds like JM is the guy who would have seen lots of LR transmission internals and knows them well.
As you say, giving the beast "the beans" lots can give the centre diff a real work out, the other place that can flog out, is the spline inside the gear on the output shaft of the gearbox feeding into the transfer box, (model/year dependent), there have been a few of those strip the inside completely out of the gear because the splines in the gears were soft, short and badly lubricated, an improved replacement gear is available, it has longer spline engagement and holes that direct lube oil onto the splines.
You can check that spline by removing the PTO plate off the back of your transfer case and observing the backlash between the output shaft and gear which is easily seen when rocking the driveshaft back/forth with the gearbox in fourth, (straight through) gear.
