4×4 novice

I've previously used green lanes on a motorbike and now want to use a 4×4 but not sure what to buy. I have a budget of up to 10k, any recommendations?

Oh you will start a hornets nest. Don't buy the obvious such as defender yet as the prices are overblown. If you have a need mudplugging cheaper options discovery Freelander 1 and other 4x4 makers.. one of clubs dedicated to muddy adventure worth a peek. Defender is okay 90s but you can keep buying and spending to much when you want enjoying not going bald.

Second the Suzuki, much cheaper/much smaller so will fit down all the tight lanes with no issues, dont stick massive wheels/spotlights on it or you will upset the walkers/ramblers etc, might seem funny at the time but they will eventually win in getting all the lanes shut.

Hi and welcome!

A disco 2 would be the Best Buy if you want a Landy. Otherwise, the jimny is a good call.

Thanks for the ideas guys. Been looking about and think I've settled on a Mitsubishi Shogun.
Which age/model?

For laning, it depends. Are you doing local ones or long distances to get to them? Do you want to carry people/gear?

By and large lanes should not be challenging terrain. The Shogun is capable but is IFS/IRS and doesn't have the most clearance. I'm not sure the Gen3's have TCS either, so can be a little lacking on tougher terrain. That said I really like how they look, esp the SWB version. I believe they suffer catastrophic engine failures due to the injector pump. I think the Gen4 solves this and might have TCS.

Lots of options out there though. Smaller and more compact might be a consideration. And while Defender prices are high, they represent a good investment and won't loose any money. Some very worthy Jeeps at this money too.

Take into account running costs and if you can do the repairs yerself.
