Gunk in filter.jpg
Found this sitting on top of the filter when I unscrewed it. ANY ideas ???? Sort of stringy and rubbery
At a quess, not what you want to find when your replacing a blown Turbo on a vehicle you've only owned a few months

The sump is put on with sealer. Have a look underneath and see if the same colour sealer is oozing out on the outside. Having said that there should be a straining mesh on the oil pipe from the sump. Might be worth checking.

Head was rebuilt and oil cooler has been off
There's your clue, oil cooler, obviously a stupid attempt to seal what should be a self sealing fitting, probably one of the fittings on the cooler has no o-ring, some slack work there. That hunk of silicone could not get up to there from the sump but can get there from the return side of the cooler, fortunately the inlet side of oil filter.
Silicone sealer is really a boon to mechanics stopping leaks on Landies, but it needs to be used wisely otherwise it can cause lots of grief.
