Hi all.

I've been looking at changing my wheels on my Disco 1. Currently running 265/75/16 Kingpin muds remolds on standard steelies that I flipped the centers to give greater offset.
Looking to fit 35's to maximize my diff clearance.

2 questions.
Firstly how much of a difference would I get running 15" wheels.
Secondly what advantage are there running Simax tyres over cheap remolds?

Cheers Chris.

To me the difference in price isn't justified. Remoulds are the same off road. I have had a chunk of rubber fly off a special track before but for the price, I don't really care. It's still cheaper to buy 6 insas for every 4 simex.

See thats what I thought. My Kingpins have been going strong for 2 years now and with no problem. Been offered a set of Simex 35's on 16" wolf wheels missing a few mm of tread for a little bit less than I can get a "new" set of 35x15 remoulds plus -35mm off set modulars.

Not sure whats best really.

I think there are a couple of points here.

1. To run 35's you'll need a decent lift and still need to trim/cut the wheel arches.

2. Gearing, 35's will kill on road performance with the stock 3.54:1 diffs. You're low crawl speed will also be rubbish by comparison.

3. Axles. Have you upgraded your half shafts and diffs? 35's are likely to mean more broken bits more often if not.

4. Power. Releated to point 2, but if you not a running a modded Tdi or a V8 forget it. You won't really have the power to make use of them, certainly not with stock gearing.

As for Simex's, well there is the same difference between a remould and a non remould. The Simex doesn't alter this argument.

Simex's also usually hold their edge better off road too compared to remoulds and are likely to out last them.

What Simex's are you looking at specially? Guessing 35.10.50 16's Extreme Trekkers? Are they radials or cross plys? If the latter you might not want to run them on the road too much.

i had 35" simex on the fender and currently have 36" simex on the rr bobtail
ive had insas and i fell that the remoulds behaved very badly on the road and in the wet.

yes the simex are exspensive but perform better, handle better and in my experience lasted longer,i feel the extra cost is totally justified

as with every thing in life ya pay for what ya get,but from a price point of view the insas do offer good value for money if your on a budget

i also had the silverstone extreme tyres £800 for a set of 4 35/11.50/15 tyres on steel modulars they were good also

Running 4" lift and have cut arches already so cutting more isn't an issue.
Tbh performance hasn't been hampered on my 32's so not to worried about the size increase plus I'll soon be increasing tge fueling and running a larger intercourse.

Knackered a diff pin in the past but it I do break anything its not scrappy hard to fix.
Gives me the excuse to upgrade to air lockers and uprated half shafts anyway lol.
Yes thats right Simex extreme are the ones I've been offered.

Tbh my Kingpin have done around 10,000 miles mostly on road and they haven't lost much tread at all, also they've been fine on the road and great off it.

WL, did you find the 15's better for off road?

15 or 16 inch will make next to no odds. At least I don't believe you could tell from the drivers seat.

Personally I think the Simexs are worth it. But they are more money. Ive been running some Jungle Trekker II's for a few years now. Really pleased with their on and off road performance.

I have insa special tracks... have had them for the last 2 years..

no problems with chunks coming off and I only use it mainly on Salisbury plains.. no problems on the road either. its a land rover, not a boy racer car.

tbh no i went with then purely assuming more tyre was better than more rim,but in the sticky stuff you wouldnt know what you were runnin

i could be persuaded to part with my mach 5 rims with 36" simex on and maybe the front/rear air lockers and compressor, allisport goodies etc

Cheers JP though being male, under 30 and living in Essex anything I drive is considered a boy racer car lol.

Hmmm, might go for this set if mine sell then.

I have a friend who runs some 32.9.50 Simex Extreme Trekkers, I'd say they always seem to out perform all of the copies I've seen. They are cross plys though, so not really a road friendly tyre. Don't know about the 36's though.

BTW - my Jungle Trekker II's work best aired down, 12psi or lower. Huge different in ability. More so than I've noticed with other MT's.
