I'm going to be putting some sill and rear corner checker plate (black) on to my defender in the coming weeks.

I have never done anything like this before so a few questions:
1. What size rivets would I need? Would these do the job?
Black 4mm Dome Head Rivets Pack Of 50 - RVT4B

2. Do I need to put anything between the plate and the bodywork to stop rattles / water ingress?

3. What would be the cheapest (usable) rivet gun to get?

1/. 4mm rivets are adequate
2/. You could run a bead of clear mastic around the edges which will prevent water ingress and reduce any rattles
3/. Get the best that you can afford, as you will need it in the future. A half decent one would be around a tenner.

Mammouth checker plate is bolt on and comes with a set of nuts and bolts so no need to start riveting and as Oldseadog said, a bead of silicone does a good job round the edge.
